The thread centers on New Zealand's upcoming election, primarily debating the economic management and policy differences between the center-left Labour government and center-right National/ACT opposition. Key criticisms target Labour's fiscal stewardship, citing ballooning government expenditure #7#272, housing unaffordability, and unfulfilled promises like KiwiBuild and dental care expansion #16#12. A user #7 highlighted Labour's annual 9% spending growth versus 1.5% under previous governments, arguing this fueled inflation. National's tax-cut policy faced scrutiny over funding gaps and legality, with user #215 questioning Luxon's reliance on "trust me" assurances.
Leadership competence emerged as a critical theme, particularly in later posts. Luxon drew heavy criticism after a contentious interview where he struggled to defend policy details #194#199#211, while Willis faced backlash for her economic credentials. Hipkins garnered fleeting praise for articulation but was ultimately seen as representing poor governmental outcomes #45#119. A trusted user #308 presented expert economic analysis contradicting Treasury optimism. Infrastructure issues—like Wellington's water crisis and the dental school staffing shortage—were cited as examples of systemic mismanagement #235#12. Notable policy debates included road-user charges for EVs #220, immigration impacts on rents #299, and coalition scenarios involving NZ First #182#258. Early fringe discussions on candidates' rugby allegiances gave way to substantive policy critiques, culminating in grim Treasury forecasts discussed in posts #271#304#308. User #168 also revealed concerns about Labour rushing regulatory changes to entrench policies pre-election.

He doesn't need to know any policies, he's a populist and unfortunately that seems to be the type of politician we know and love.Watching q and a, winston peters is an absolute embarrassment. Sounds like an old man that has no idea of his policies.
He's surely going to start sounding senile like Biden or Trump soon. He's already saying silly sound bites like Trump. Mind you he's been doing that since the 90s. Surprised he can keep up with the crap he sprouts to be honest.Watching q and a, winston peters is an absolute embarrassment. Sounds like an old man that has no idea of his policies.
Turned it into nothing but a freakshow, he’s trying to appeal to a dying type of voter and the sooner they’re gone the better. EmbarrassingHe doesn't need to know any policies, he's a populist and unfortunately that seems to be the type of politician we know and love.
The last 15 years of election cycles have taught us that and we never seem to learn the lesson
Just been watching the Q and A program and Newshub program.Been a while since I’ve seen such a shameful display. Caught red handed and had no way to explain his way out so hurled insults. The final threat of the show was sad.
Didn't waste my time watching that charlatan but I'm not surprised. Nothing there and a disgrace to politicsBeen a while since I’ve seen such a shameful display. Caught red handed and had no way to explain his way out so hurled insults. The final threat of the show was sad.
Absolutely and another off my listDidn't waste my time watching that charlatan but I'm not surprised. Nothing there and a disgrace to politics
Heyzeuss spare me, I have always regarded him as an idiot since I first met him 40 years ago.Watching q and a, winston peters is an absolute embarrassment. Sounds like an old man that has no idea of his policies.
Jack Tame did a great job of highlighting all that’s wrong with the system we’ve currently got, Peters early in the labour/greens/nzfirst coalition gave impressions supporting a cogovernance setting but since receiving some sizeable donations-now sees it as “apartheid”. He certainly came off second best against Rebecca Wright yesterday also so all and all it’s been a poor weekend for him. Doesn’t seem to be able to cope that he can’t get under their skin, to threaten the the format of the show when he gets into government was one of the most telling comments from a politician I’ve seen. Was quite shocked as I think Tame was. That interview was just a complete melt down, Jack Tame worked him over like a prize fighter.
An appeal to the conspiracy fringe who believe the media is currently paid off by the Labour Party.Doesn’t seem to be able to cope that he can’t get under their skin, to threaten the the format of the show when he gets into government was one of the most telling comments from a politician I’ve seen. Appealing to his masters apparently, as peters put it.An appeal to the conspiracy fringe who believe the media is currently paid off by the Labour Party.
