Maybe so, but holding up these Scandinavian countries as the ideal without aknowledging where thier funding is or has come from is disingenuous. Also the public/private mix. Sweden have increasing numbers of privately run hospitals for example. It's fine wanting something similar but you can't just think we can have it by taxing more when even in these countries the high tax is struggling now to cover the costs of providing it. So, we want it all here but without the benefit of something like oil exports to support it, cry the sky is falling when private sector is mentioned even though these other countries are doing just this and in our country where there is more and more a culture of take and get what you can for free versus the culture in the Scandinavian countries mentioned. There are many other things that could be mentioned as well. With a country of our population and geographical spread, with our main income being tourism which is heavily down, and agriculture which is more and more being frowned upon, we simply have to be prudent with how and where we spend our money.

Thats not a clear goal, that's your opinion. I am all for a public/private mix where it makes the most sense and we get better use of our funding. Sweden for example, one of those countries you just said was your ideal, has just that with it's health care system.

Norway has high royalties on it's exported oil which funds it SWF - We're opening up mining here - no one is talking about adjusting the royalties paid to us.
But let's not kid ourselves - not all the Scandi countries are extraction heavy economies, they have diverse, high tax economies that fund strong public services.
We don't have nice things because we have a conservative defeatist attitude. We are fiscally weak minded as a country.

Netherlands has about 20 million pop living very high density in a small area, totally opposite logistics to the NZ model.

Where did I say their economies were failing? I said the tax they are taking is struggling to cover the public services being provided. Sweden look like they will be borrowing a lot to fund this despite this high tax take and diverse economy. Happy to have nice things, we all want them. But you can't pick and choose the nice stuff from other countries and ignore how they get them. The thing to is, as we have seen over the last few years in particular, that poorly designed commitments or public spending becomes a sieve.

There needs to be a number of changes in this country before we can even consider getting anywhere near attempting the path some of these countries are now on.

If you want that model, you have to accept public ownership of massive mining companies drilling and extracting fossil fuels.
