For all the calls for less governmental control, there would be chaos without it.
There is chaos with it. Lack of supply leading to poverty and bad outcomes.

If there was more freedom to build as, where and how we wanted we would have lower pricing, more supply and probably more boom/ bust and more quality issues but a need would be supplied.

How do you think people would feel if a 25 storey apartment was built next to their single family home because there was no height controls? A chicken farm or a refuse station in a suburban area because of no zoning controls? Churches without providing parking because there’s no transport rules. No noise limits on construction allowing it to proceed 24/7. More failed cantilevered balconies because there’s no Building Regulations? Plumbing fittings working properly because there are regulations that provide the calculations for vented waste stacks.

Most, but definitely not all, regulations, might been seen by some to limit what people can put on “their land” and how it’s constructed but they’re needed. Even with the Building Act, we got the leaky homes crisis. Just imagine how much worse it would be without the controls…. even though, admittedly, some are painful to deal with!!!

How do you think people would feel if a 25 storey apartment was built next to their single family home because there was no height controls? Bring it on! It would actually solve the housing crisis

A chicken farm or a refuse station in a suburban area because of no zoning controls? never going to happen as the land is to expensive and uneconomic

Churches without providing parking because there’s no transport rules. Doesn’t that happen now with houses built with no parking? No problem but it won’t be viable if not fit for purpose

No noise limits on construction allowing it to proceed 24/7. No real problem if we allow work but noise limits rather than no work allowed at all. Be over much faster as well. I live in a touristy area with constant parties around us over summer - don’t like it? Insulate your own property. Same as moving next to an existing sports stadium!

More failed cantilevered balconies because there’s no Building Regulations? all those sort of issues should be dealt with through procesution of trained experts - still got to have minimum standards. I’m all for less consents but using qualified people with a big stick to ensure standards are maintained…

Plumbing fittings working properly because there are regulations that provide the calculations for vented waste stacks. as above

What do you want them to do? Govt never makes a rockstar economy, they get out of the way and enable private enterprise to do it. There had been a lot of getting out of the way at the moment and undoing Labours failed state control policies.

We haven’t even been finished the first 100 day plan yet. Success will be slow and by 1000 small changes rather that Labours bold statements with no follow through.

Judge in 2 years when seemingly insignificant things like removing interest deductibility has allowed the rental market to flow efficiently again.
Bollocks, if it was that simple national or act would never be out of power.
Take your example, removing interest deductibility might improve rentals slightly but we don't have enough houses so every rental means one less house in the owners market and we have a social housing crisis so need a shit ton of social housing, Bishops answer was open up more land for housing, ok but who builds the houses and who stops the land bankers from stockpiling and increasing prices and who stops the council fucking it up with the RC process etc etc. It needs a govt with some big ideas, attention to detail and balls to do some big things not motherhood and tinkering so you make it to the next election unscathed while feathering your own nest.

And feathering the nests of your donors in Big Tobacco, Oil, Guns and other assorted big psychopathic robber barons.

1000’s of small changes not any one big thing. Interest deductibility - investors will buy again when it’s economic driving sales by developers driving more supply.

National had a rockstar economy, finally got back into surplus after the GFC and had our social services better than now. The left built a case around child poverty, run down health system and wealth distribution.

Ignoring they had the most votes in 2017, the grass is always greener… child poverty is worse; our health system is worse and wealth distribution is based on productivity. So Mational back in. But people will forget and get bored again in another 9 years 🤷‍♂️

Their masterplan was kind of derailed by a pandemic though. That is if they ever really had a plan.
