i was reading recently that the decision whether to rebuild the Wairoa to Napier railway was to be made soon. The rail ends at Napier Port. The inference that it was important infrastructure because it would reintroduce mainly log deliveries to the port via rail, keep those heavy trucks off the road, reduce carbon emissions etc.
However, before Cyclone Gabriel destroyed the railway, only about 10% of Napier Port freight was via rail. The reason being it was a much more expensive alternative to road and largely disregarded by log exporters.
It surprised me but evidently, rail is expensive for moving freight.
