The thread centers on New Zealand's upcoming election, primarily debating the economic management and policy differences between the center-left Labour government and center-right National/ACT opposition. Key criticisms target Labour's fiscal stewardship, citing ballooning government expenditure #7#272, housing unaffordability, and unfulfilled promises like KiwiBuild and dental care expansion #16#12. A user #7 highlighted Labour's annual 9% spending growth versus 1.5% under previous governments, arguing this fueled inflation. National's tax-cut policy faced scrutiny over funding gaps and legality, with user #215 questioning Luxon's reliance on "trust me" assurances.
Leadership competence emerged as a critical theme, particularly in later posts. Luxon drew heavy criticism after a contentious interview where he struggled to defend policy details #194#199#211, while Willis faced backlash for her economic credentials. Hipkins garnered fleeting praise for articulation but was ultimately seen as representing poor governmental outcomes #45#119. A trusted user #308 presented expert economic analysis contradicting Treasury optimism. Infrastructure issuesālike Wellington's water crisis and the dental school staffing shortageāwere cited as examples of systemic mismanagement #235#12. Notable policy debates included road-user charges for EVs #220, immigration impacts on rents #299, and coalition scenarios involving NZ First #182#258. Early fringe discussions on candidates' rugby allegiances gave way to substantive policy critiques, culminating in grim Treasury forecasts discussed in posts #271#304#308. User #168 also revealed concerns about Labour rushing regulatory changes to entrench policies pre-election.

She seems to have a monopoly on any political commentary on TVNZHow is she even moderating the debate? Surely better options out there.
Would require a super majority I would thinkThe next government should legislate for a election term of four years in office
He is impressive this guy JackShould be Jack Tame.

Probably a referendum at a future election .The next government should legislate for a election term of four years in office
Just another bonkers media rant from a poster that says he's main media source is the NZ Herald.Facts:
Labour 2017 election: Labourās 2017 election spending promise was exceeded by $16b (based on pre covid figure.)
Labour 2020 election: Labours 2020 election spending forecast was exceeded by $23b.
Nationals total tax plan is being argued over by amounts less than the drop in current forecast business tax revenue⦠insignificant.
Based on history over the next term, National might stuff up by $1b, Labour will stuff up by $30b.
So do we have 30x the articles about Labours incompetence from the media. Instead there has been a deliberate smear campaign against National and ignoring of Labour from the media. Agenda?
If Labour return to power the media has failed in their job of holding the government to account. More that that, they have enabled itā¦. Which is corruption in a democracy in my eyes.
Why is the media pushing BS? We need an independent media in NZ detached from government funding. And even worse, the fact people believe their BS shows how stuffed NZ is.
I thought Luxon was well prepared and got the better of Hipkins. What did people think of the debate last night? I thought it was pretty even, and like the whole campaigns, pretty boring. Hipkins had trouble defending the last 6 years of government while Luxon failed to land any real blows.,
Mate, we have one prospective PM telling as to trust the assumptions theyāve made on overseas buyers while the other says we can trust supermarkets to pass on all the GST reductions on fruit and vegeā¦. While saying that thereās a grocery commissioner in place because we canāt trust the Supermarkets.Facts:

Watching the breakfast show and as a homeowner, find no cause evictions alarming for renters. Some deserved, but I donāt think this is the way to go.Mate, we have one prospective PM telling as to trust the assumptions theyāve made on overseas buyers while the other says we can trust supermarkets to pass on all the GST reductions on fruit and vegeā¦. Personally, I have a huge lack of trust in either of them.
Luxon won, though it certainly wasnāt a walkover. Having said that, weāve had 6 years of great debaters. That skill doesnāt translate to moving the country forward unfortunatelyWhat did people think of the debate last night? I thought it was pretty even, and like the whole campaigns, pretty boring. One of the major problems in this country is how parties are more concerned about appealing to their voter base than actually picking "middle ground" policy on things like removing/evicting renters. Labour went too far and now National are going to go back too far in the other direction.Watching the breakfast show and as a homeowner, find no cause evictions alarming for renters. Some deserved, but I donāt think this is the way to go.
Sorry but your last paragraph doesn't seem to make too much sense.Luxon won, though it certainly wasnāt a walkover. Having said that, weāve had 6 years of great debaters. That skill doesnāt translate to moving the country forward unfortunately
Itās hard to debate anything on Labourās record, so Hipkins couldnāt really back up his policies. Or if he had new ones, he was criticised for not doing them sooner
Hipkins isnāt a prime minister. If you came in cold, not knowing who they were, you would pick Hipkins as being the prime minister
