I met with Santana Minerals a few months back. Employment impact alone will be big & then royalties will be very positive for NZ Inc. - particularly at the current gold price. It’s definitely beneficial for New Zealand.

I'm off the view that mining should never have been allowed to be fast-tracked.... but I also wouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water.
A number of green energy projects have gotten off the faster since the fast-tracking process came in at the beginning of the year as well as a number of social/cheap housing projects. Interestingly, I assisted another consult with one of the latter a few months ago. Their original RC application had been opposed by KO on traffic generation problems. We ended up supplying more information for a fast-tracked non-RC application than we would have if they had gone back through the standard council RC application process.
Just from one application, but it seems to me that to get an application fast-tracked required more information, but once applied for, the process of getting approval was definitely faster when those checking it are happy they're received all the information they require.

Not my question to answer however for every project there obviously needs to be a full evaluation of all costs including environmental & of course the benefits as well.
I believe that Oceania mines pay only 2% royalties to the Crown. A mere pittance in the big picture

The fast track process is more about donors to get back door access and circumvent rigours controls.
A mining royalty of 1 or 2 cents per dollar sent off shore - to wreck one of the countries greatest assets the environment.
Such pathetically back wards way to handle the economic issues we face as a country.
Shane Jones should not be handling this for the country - he is almost shamelessly corrupt and antagonistic about it.
Absolutely. Recently he stood up in parliament and proclaimed that bottom trawling in the Hauraki Gulf has little or no effect on the seabed when everyone knows that is absolutely bs.
How he was never challenged by the opposition or media is a mystery

Sensible people believe that if a consent is granted the next lot don’t withdraw it.
That uncertainty totally kills investment in NZ and makes us an uninvestible laughing stock that everyone will steer clear of.

Countries that embrace foreign expertise, investment and technology that the country can’t provide itself = able to achieve greater than the sum of its parts.
Inward looking people that equate foreign expertise to trickle down = bring out the banjos…
It's almost like some think there has never been mining in NZ before because surely the country wouldn't be as clean and green as it is if there was? Yet many of them will also point to other countries as a success story that have been built off making use of their natural resources....
Im not against mining as long as the government does things properly. Overseas countries get up to 50+ % in royalties on sales or profits. My main concern is that Shane Jones is the man in charge and he is not to be trusted. Shonkiest politician ever.
