With only 1 Plunket shield round so far Tickner is the best option available at the moment. O'Rourke, Jamieson, Sears or Fisher would be there if they weren't injured. Kristian Clarke could have been a bolster.
I thought we were weak to be fair. The west Indian bowlers were not that great. When Smith and Bracewell were going, it was a really nice time to bat.
Both then threw their wickets away. Young batting at 5 and in all sorts! He must be axed!
Lathem did all the hard work then didnt kick on again. Blundell should not have been selected.
I dont care what anyone says, the black caps coaching staff and selectors need to give themselves an uppercut! If it was australia we would have been rolled for under 150.

I think when you look at the ages of our top tier players we will be a crisis similar to Zimbabwe in the future.
For me there has to be another level, a develioment level where younger players can learn their trade. We have Aussie next door. Give them games against State 2nd 11s. Be prepared for some thrashings but it is a learning process..

Losing Mitchell and Santner for this one is a big deal. These are crucial WTC points.
There is not a single player in today's team that you could say is in form with the bat, some are just plain unworthy, and it feels like we are going back to some of the bits and pieces allrounders of the 90s. How Tickner is in the squad is beyond me.
They must be worried about Jamieson's ability to last 5 days.

I get your comparison to the Zimbabwean team that had the Flower brothers (our Kane and Ross) with some very useful players around them, but Zimbabwean crickets biggest crisis that followed the retirements was the political interference, thinking back to when Olonga a very good bowler had to cut his career short to go and live in England.
I'm not sure all is well in Australian cricket at the moment either with that comparison. Their best long form players are now well into their 30s, they have no idea what to do post Khawaja and when Warner retired they were so clueless they tried replacing him with a T20 slogger who didn't have the patience for test cricket and didn't last very long.

Looking at glass half full it is in both counyries interest to invest in developing players. No need for age restrictions. One of our best batsmen Andrew Jones debuted at 29.
I think it is a blessing in disguise. Blundell has been mediocre for too long now. I hope Hay comes in and kills it and takes his spot.
If Phillips did not have his back issues and stayed keeping that would have solved this issue already.
