Sports 🏏 Black Caps

Stead, Southee, Blundell, Conway, Santner all need to be replaced, and the replacement strategy should have been there for the last four years. Stead clearly has, never had, a replacement plan and is stuck in the past.

Williamson, Henry are getting close to some form of retirement or short from move.

So this team has been completely destroyed by the strategy in the last 3 to 4 years for test cricket as short form dominates. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Devon Conway.

And it's also apparent that Stead doesn't possess the skillset to turn this around. There is no backup plan - we need the equivalent of Webby to take over, e.g. a Hesson sort.

10 more years in the test wilderness - can't stand T20 cricket meself, it's a shame to see this happen.

Ajaz should have always been the first choice spinner, there to take wickets at home and away. And agree, spinning should be an integral part of nz cricket forever.

Feeling really disappointed with the black caps. The selection blunders have cost us big time. this result is embarrassing and does not bode well confidence wise heading to India. Starting from the top, feel for Latham he would he better suited to the middle order as he plays well against spin. For mine Young has a better technique and temperament then Conway he should be opening. Kane solid as a rock. Ravindra talented but loose. Mitchell another 1 day player. Blundell is OK I guess. Phillips = rock star keep him in. Santner = Shit waste of a space. Southee should have rode off into the sunset with Boult and Wagner. Now he's holding up the development of Sears and Henry. Ajaz is good. O Rourke looks good but very raw. Shit for brains ol stead.

We were never going to save the test but the way the three wickets have been thrown today has been disappointing. Worst test performance in years.

I can see an innings defeat in the next 3 tests against India ... Southee should be gone ... he can't bat and his bowling lacks pace ...Conway not an opener , that must've been his highest score for a long while .
India just demolished Bangladesh they'll do the same to the black caps

As terrible as the performance was in the second test it was still so great to watch the purest form of the game. That ground at Galle is amazing. T20 has its place but is so forgettable.

Steady is way past his expiry date NZ Cricket has no idea what it's doing for years.

Pathetic T20 management and now losing 2:0 to SL including by an inning and 100+ runs, he'd be showing his characters by NOT resigning in the next few weeks/months. We need Vettori/Bond/Fleming or fresh management, this is back to the 90s stuff and Williamson's swansong years wasted when we have Rachin and Phillips rising up to support him

In our conditions this would be my 11

1 Latham ( lack of options to replace him)
2 Young
3 Williamson
4 Ravindra
5 Conway (always been a middle order player
6 Mitchell
7 Blundell
8 Phillips
9 Henry
10 Sears
11 O’Rourke

That adds depth to batting order, a spin option who is an all rounder and three seamers.
In spin friendly conditions Sears drops out and Ajaz comes in.

Santner never even gets near any squad again ever under any circumstances

Edit to add that Kyle Jameson comes in for Sears if he ever gets back to full health and bats at 9 dropping Henry to 10

I like that lineup. If there is some worry about the workload with 3 seamers then Conway would have to retain the opening spot and maybe Nathan Smith could slot in at 8? Has a great first class bowling record and can hold a bat too. At 26 is the perfect age to be coming into the test arena.

Mitchell would be bowling a bit with that line up to take some load from the seamers and Phillips would get a decent work load as well.
So if the seamers can’t handle that they aren’t fit enough

Not sure if Mitchell can be trusted with the ball these days. Used to bowl a lot early in his first class career and everyone thought he would provide a similar role with the ball as de Grandhomme. Instead he has exceeded expectations with the bat and bowls rarely, the few times he's bowled recently he's been smashed around the park.

The old 'bat time' conservative tactics they adopted in the second innings of the first test really grated me. In subcontinent conditions there is going to be a ball that gets you in the 4th innings of a match if you just wait for it. The game was there to be taken and the NZ response was as meek as has become type. This is not the way of modern test cricket; this team is behind the 8 ball, as well as lacking quality.

Southee is a champion of NZ cricket, but it would be hard to find a player that has had such an extended run with the results he has had. I get that there is a lack of depth, but we are going to need to manufacture some, and throw a few players in the deep end. It is not just Santner for our lack of quality spin options, Ajaz is a tidy, but vanilla bowler who looks better than he is because he only plays in spin-friendly conditions. Phillips can be our spin option in NZ, and hopefully Ashok is ready sooner rather than later.

Despite all this, it is nice to see Sri Lanka do well when all was looking lost for them. Their team has a fantastic balance, and their top 7 is genuinely good. Kamindu is the one they have been waiting for, and Kusal as wicket-keeper batsman at 7 is scary for opposition teams. They have a couple of good quicks, and their spin is good at home. They've been unbeaten against India in a recent ODI series, won a test in England and done a clean sweep on us. It is hard to begrudge that.
