I think you can write him off. He is out with another stress fracture in the back. Not sure you will get much of a run of games out of him. If I was him I'd focus on t20 leagues and make as much coin as possible
Didn’t realise he’s turning 30 this month as well.
Yup, make that cash.

I'm not writing him off. He has an uphill battle, but he doesn't have to look far for inspiration.

Matt Henry has 10cm of titanium and two screws in his spine, and all his real success has happened post 30.

Australia's great hope Cameron Green has had 4 stress fractures, Pat Cummins was written off due to his tumultuous start with fractures at the beginning of his career.

Boult recovered from one, as did Lillee, Younis etc. Bond didn't succumb to his until his 4th one.

Definitely not a helpful injury, but fingers crossed for his recovery. Thankfully pace isn't his main weapon.

I hope he does come back. But all those players you mentioned had their issues well before they were 30-31 which is where he is at. If he gets himself right he should look to maximize his earning potential for the remaining years he has left.

Nice sentiment, but he is a long format player. He was very lucky to perform at the right time in front of the right audience for a bonanza of an IPL deal. It is his sole franchise experience, one which he didn't do well at in a format he is not suited for.

You are probably right in saying that he is up against it for a test recall, but good things can happen to those that are hungry, positive and disciplined.

This year has exposed the black caps imo. Here’s a list of observations:

- southee should have retired a year or more ago. He was given an extended run due to the captaincy, but continued to not be an effective wicket taker. Is retiring now but was persisted with ‘out of respect’ for far too long
- blundell is not an international cricketer. He is barely a fc batsman, but has somehow kept his position despite seemingly being unable to score more than 30 for as long as I can remember.
- Conway is horribly out of form & is not a test player. He’s someone who goes after the game & is better suited for the shorter forms of the game.
- will young needs to open. Yes Kane comes in to take his #3 spot but there’s no way that Conway deserved a place over young.
- Latham is pulling the same card as southee. Experience, and ‘leadership’ is keeping him in the side, but I feel the captaincy is the only thing keeping him in the side. He has struggled with the bat for 18-24 months. He is a good wicket keeper, drop blundell, give Latham the gloves & bring in another batsmen.
- how Phillips isn’t batting higher bewilders me. We’ve seen time and time again he can play but is constantly let down by his tail order batsmen, leaving him to play overly aggressive & getting out. He needs to bat at 6.

Blundell avg:
2022: 9
2023: 29
2024: 11

Latham avg:
2022: 42
2023: 33
2024: 25

Conway avg:
2022: 49
2023: 32
2024: 22

I understand we’re in a transition of the boult/southee era, and Kane wanting to share responsibilities meaning southee/latham keeping their spots due to captaincy, but there seems to be an intent on persisting with players who are horribly out of form, indicating the lack of confidence in our depth. What’s the worst that can happen from given mariu a crack, or cleaver, raval?

Did anyone catch Scotty Stevenson's commentary blunder (yeah I know, he makes a few, but this was the howler of all howlers)?

The batsman jams down on a ball, hits it into the ground and it dribbles away along the ground into the leg side. Stevenson starts lamenting about Blundell dropping the catch! It was as bizarre as I have ever seen.

Well apart from this:

Really pleased for Blundell with this fighting knock.
Fighting knock maybe but zero pressure with there being no chance of winning the game. Where is the fighting knocks with the game on the line? None of our batsmen are showing any real ability to be able to dig in - Williamson excluded though he is back to having all the pressure on him scoring runs because no one else is. This knock by Blundell will probably buy him another season.....

Really pleased for Blundell with this fighting knock.

He is playing very nicely in his home ground.

This is a great batting pitch, which makes our efforts all the more inglorious. You can tell that England are just trying to put as many miles into Bashir's legs for his development right now instead of trying to kill off the game.
