Sports 🏏 Black Caps

Despite his form and technique issues not warranting his ongoing selection, his 5 test centuries mean he deserves his place in NZ test cricket history as a very good wicketkeeper batsman..

A great knock, but I haven't seen anything to suggest the fragility to the moving ball has disappeared.

Another tragedy is not having Smithy commentating the Television coverage.
I was in the camp of giving Southee this last game but having second thoughts after Smithy put it like that, is there anyone worthy to bring in though?

Smithy is always on the ball.

I just think it is unfair to throw Young in as an opener, he deserves to play in his natural position.

I wonder if Ravindra can open with Latham actually. It has been his position domestically and he opens in ODIs. He would play positive cricket. It allows Young in his proper place, perhaps some extra protection for an out of practice Williamson at 4. Latham has been getting plenty of starts he just needs to make a few count. He actually looked good today. It is mirroring some of his early career.

If Hamilton looks green I'd actually be tempted to bring in another middle order batsman for Phillips, which will be crazy to most, but I'd rather we focus on sorting our best future batsman out first and our best new look bowling line up. We have a chance to trial a few guys before the next WTC cycle.

6 batsman, a new keeper, 4 out and out bowlers picked on merit.

Did anyone catch Scotty Stevenson's commentary blunder (yeah I know, he makes a few, but this was the howler of all howlers)?

The batsman jams down on a ball, hits it into the ground and it dribbles away along the ground into the leg side. Stevenson starts lamenting about Blundell dropping the catch! It was as bizarre as I have ever seen.

Well apart from this:

What a shame we missed out on Smithy bantering away with David Gower.

I dont know who put these TV commentary teams together but they have no clue about chemistry whatsoever. I mean i dont doubt Bondy's and Macca's techinical expertise on the mechanics of their respective arts but the lack of banter, character, and chemistry makes the TV commentary mind numbingly bland.

Turn on the Radio and the difference is night and day.

You'd have to assume it is to do with the terms of his Sky contract (not playing for the opposition)

I just want Stevenson gone. He's a muppet, and it embarrassing having him in the box with quality overseas commentators.

Yeah McMillan and Bondy are alright, but a little vanilla. I'd love Doully back, and wouldn't be against a Richardson return (as long as there is someone there to take the piss out of him). As long as they don't go near Danny Morrison!

I actually like the thought of Young, Williamson, Ravindra at 3,4,5.

Philips at 6 as the batting all-rounder. Keeper at 7, Smith at 8.

Problem is we have a conservative coach that has taken us backwards significantly and it's almost like the players don't know how to play anymore or what the team is about now. Contrast that to the Hesson days and the Baz lead england team now.

Craig Cumming used to do that brilliantly......both opened together for Otago, knows which buttons to push.....then again if things get boring all they have to do is roll this out

He'll never get a commentary gig but Lou Vincent would be great. Just need someone with a bit of an out there personality to help with the more serious tone. I remember Phillips was hilarious when he was mic'd up for a T20 game and probably has a future in the commentary box. Must be really annoying for the players, but he made it work despite one awkward moment.

I don't consider Phillips a batsman. I think he is a player that can bat a bit, and a player that can bowl a bit. His batting technique leaves him quite vulnerable, but he is the perfect player to come in with 300 on the board. He reminds me of early McCullum. He compensates for a lot of his shortcomings in the field. He is a good allrounder, but I think the current team predicament and the bolt from the blue discovery of his handy bowling make him seem better than he is. I think he is a luxury player, but we need to get the meat and drink specialist sorted for the next cycle first. We have to find a new opening batsman, a new opening bowler who can move the ball, and a new wicket keeper. It's audition time.

The problem is that NZ domestic cricket seems to be either 30 year old + players or 21 year olds. I think that at this point, though too early, I'd like to see them chuck a couple of young'uns in for exposure even though they are more likely to sink than swim first time around. Muhammad Abbas, Rhys Mariu, Curtis Heaphy.

It is time to be very bold. Especially whilst we have old hats like Latham and Williamson still around to pass on knowledge and maturity.

You watch them go Chapman or Nicholls instead. Perhaps even a Kuggeleijn

Yep, none of the commentators today - and Australia's commentators are the same, honestly - have anything like that good old Bill and Tony niggling aggro thing...
Never mind that none seem to have any verbal tics or accents that lend themselves to comedy...
