Looking at the stats, we've got some young gun bowlers coming through, and Henry

Southee's just taking up a spot for his retirement series on green pitches. The other young express paceman should be playing. Maybe Wagner Southee for the last test lol, poetic justice

Yeah, and if they had bought Santner in they would have left Smith out for this test

Welcome to the future. We'll have the odd highlight, but overall we are going to struggle for a few years with the loss of such a great crop of players.

It was always a case of enjoying the 2010s+ whilst they were around.

Carse is a handful.

NZC needs to be bold moving forward.

I like Smith. Can be erratic and leak a few runs but there is always something happening with him. Creates opportunities. 3 wickets plus a run out. Always competing
Probably looks the most likely to go the short ball Wagner route when there's nothing on.

Shorter, skiddier type bowler, fast enough. Still has to develop that accuracy but yeah he's definitely got a bit about him

The bizarre thing was that it was the fragile fielding that was the biggest factor. Considering we were sent in to bat and 280 was the average 1st innings score at Hagley 348 was not great, but still competitive. We produced 20 good pieces of cricket which they say is what you need to do to win a test. Smith was great in his early spells and deserved those catches to be made. I just hope Latham and Phillips get their catching confidence back as I have never seen them drop so many before.
For sure the signs were there well before the Indian series (where we caught everything) fielding standards had slipped.

Once again tho the fragile batting of our top 6 has been exposed again. Just dont seem to be able to bat in partnerships anymore (and tbh havent really since the safety blanket days of the Taylor/Williamson show) have only passed 400 twice in the last 26 innings.....always going to struggle.. No quick fix or easy answer but surely the in form Young has to be there somewhere next game, and Phillips to move up the order.

Rhys Mariu 129* and still going as the next hit out after his 240 last week. Averaging mid 60s opening the batting.
Still only 22 as well. Nice to see a young un scoring heavily. NZ A probably the next step......if he scores runs there then 100% should be given a shot....especially with Latham and Conway struggling
