I was one of those who questioned LM's fitness for the 7 jersey. Couldn't quite see the management side of his game earlier.
Happy to eat my favourite hat as he is growing every week. Someone, either Webby, Stacey or SJ or maybe all 3 are getting in his ear and he is obviously listening.

One thing that has been there from day one is confidence. He's sort of like you're archetypal little Aussie battler. He revels in it which is great for us.

I'm looking forward to the progression continuing but can Chook increase the GK practice please. He has a bit of a hook going.

With the goal kicking it looks to me that the missing element has been practice at kicking in game.

He strikes me as a kicker that hasn't been given a long spell slotting them in the live NRL.

What I really like about Metcalf is that he seems to be scrambling for opportunities to kick every chance he can get even tho he has been slicing the ball.

That to me is a future star kicker.

I was thinking maybe with his energiser bunny traits he's not giving himself enough time to settle and gauge.

Metcalf would be a fool to walk away from the Warriors.

Webster has changed his life, made him the man, fixed his legs, given him a happy environment, given him whatever position he wants.

What other NRL coach would treat him so, or stick by him when the performances were horribly clunky?

Like I say, Metcalf would be an idiot to walk away without treating the Warriors as first option.

Sure he will be worth more money next round, but the money has nothing to do with why Metcalf came here in the first place.

Fans need to stop fretting about throwing money at this guy and embrace that Webster is going to be one of the small group of NRL coaches that players want to play for.

I would be very disappointed if the Warriors tried to use money as the reason for Metcalf to stay, market value offers no more. If he doesn't want fair market value then it is not about the money it is about geography and not understanding how good his life has been here in New Zealand, as such let him go no worries.

Agree.
Another good thing on our side is Metcalf is such a footy nerd, that he'll probably realise getting the Warriors their maiden premiership will cement him as an all time great. Legacy is important when considering greatness.

He'd be a national hero and world famous in NZ.
I presume his and his partner's families are in Oz though, the club can't do anything about that if and when family calls, new babies change all your priorities.

He's worth what ever other clubs are willing to pay
Worth is all relative.

The great clubs like the Storm keep players for less value than the perennial bottom 8 clubs. To be competitive we need players to stay for the team culture and opportunities as much as money.

Yes, the Bears could offer a fortune and that would be his value but I would like to think players stay for slightly less.

We have:

- Webster and his elite man management skills including coach of the year recently
- a genuine consistent top 8 team under Webster with gun junior players coming through and a potential premiership window
- an owner committed and able to promise non-monetary things (eg SJ played for unders and now has the post career opportunities)
- genuine game development for most players under Webster with many at career highs.
- players playing origin and internationals due to our success and development of players
- intangibles like injury management for Metcalf; him being pushed and promoted via tv interviews through sky, etc

Would he give all that away for an extra $100k at the Bears, where he will be in career progression limbo?

All true 👍 Anyone know who his manager is?

That interview is a coaches dream, that's the sort of stuff that you see in interviews with Jordan, Kobe etc. Id pay him top ten half money.

"I told Webby I want to wear No.7 and I want to be that player. I want to be the one that the boys can rely on. I look at it as a privilege to be able to do that.

And

"There was no doubt in my mind that the years and the work and my dedication, I knew I was ready for it."

Brown 1.4

Cleary, Luai 1.2
Munster Hynes 1.1
Walker 1

Is Metcalf worth as much as much as the first 7 players? Maybe, probably not. IMO he’s playing better than brown & luai, but they had to pay top dollar to get them to the club. Whether we like it or not, we’re probably still not a desirable club to come to for aussies due to changing country & uplifting theirs/partners lives.

He’s winning us games, & developing incredibly quickly. Hes mid 20s, and has under nrl 50 games. Therefore he’s probably one of, if not the best 7s coming through in the comp. With DCE, Munster, Hughes, Reynolds, hunt all 30+years old, Metcalf could be top 3 halfbacks in 2 years, now what are we willing to pay, or what are other clubs willing to splash? The allure of returning to Australia, 1million plus on the table, raise your young family in aus.. all sounds pretty tempting to me.

Whether we like it or not, Metcalf has pushed himself into the million dollar halfback status & like some other posters have noted, if we don’t pay it, someone else will & we will be back to the drawing board.

Just a fact of life .Like it or not.
If we dont upgrade him this year someone else will .Expansion teams could build a club around him.

This.
We need to lock him in, and lock him in quick.

It’s a predicament for the club because there’s no denying what he’s producing, but there’s still the history with injury to consider and how he handles big games. We’re getting a decent idea with him staying healthy (touch wood) and him wanting the big moments like the penalty from halfway in golden point. It might be a risk that the club has no alternative but to take that he’s able to keep this up , and keep progressing. Think we still need to remember that CHT is the other half of what we’re producing and think he probably needs to be locked in too

Absolutely 💯.
Metcalf must be up there with the comps best 7s and hopefully only getting better.
Guys like Brown I would argue have peaked
