Lockyer was retired when Thurston won 3/4 of his RLPA awards. Uate has one of those in his trophy cabinet though
Ok. Who in the 2010-2020 was a better player than Thurston?

If we can’t compare players across timespans, can we accept Thurston was clearly the best of his decade?

Ps never overly rated Lockyer. Good player but nothing on some of the others we talk about.

Smith & Slater the best from that decade. I’d put Thurston more on par with Teddy, different positions obviously.

Yes, but it wasn’t the NRLs official award until 1988.

Prior to 1998, the official award of the game was voted on by the referees and were known as the Rothmans Medal from 1968 to 1996. Between 1979 and 1996, both the Dally M Medal and Rothmans Medal were awarded.
Meninga still doesn't have an award when you include it. Fittler does have one if you count the 1997 ARL.
Personally, I'd pick Meninga & Fittler in any side before Thurston

Meninga an immortal and a completely different positions obviously for affecting the outcomes of the game. Meningas a legend I loved growing up but in a different way.

The best centre ever can be recognised as such but it’s impossible to compare to a spine player.

I respect Fittler. Fittler moved around centre, lock and five eights so maybe that’s what I count against him. Same with Lockyer come to think of it - fullback & five eight. Thurston as a halfback, perhaps I place more weight on that?

Don’t know, just personal opinion.
