Recruitment Warriors 2026/2027 Recruitment & Retention

To be fair to Boyd though he averaged a try assist a game & won 50% of games. Coupled with that Egan only played 4 of his 9 games and Jackson Ford got suspended for the last 3 games of the regular season. He’s a year younger than Metcalf has a far superior kicking game and his game is going to age better than Metcalf’s
Leka bailed him out at Newy, TT against Dragons and his goal kicking was useless when the pressure was on. Titans let him walk for a reason. Gap between Cup and NRL is wider than the Grand Canyon. Are you sure it was a 50% win rate!

The real question is if Metcalf doesn’t resign.
Do we just release him early and commit elsewhere?

Be it TMM or Boyd.
The young guys.

Metcalf leaving is a big part in which I wanted to pick and stick with CHT. I’m happy to concede his limitations. (Which really aren’t as bad as many on this forum make out).

I’ve seen all I need of Boyd, who can still leave btw.
And frankly, if Metcalf leaves and Boyd isn’t seen as the future. There’s no point in playing him outside of injury cover.

Personally, if Metcalf doesn’t extend. I’d release him and start 6. CHT 7 TMM with and eye on transitioning Jett or another young half into that starting half role.

We need a (semi) settled halves combo by 2027/28 when the expansion happens and pressure for halves increases.

Yeah, he often came up with critical plays when the match was in the balance. His speed/running threat is his ultimate difference. Watching the Linnane highlights and these two could strike up a deadly combo.
Even goal kicking against the broncos, though kicking wasn’t a high point ultimately. Just seems to have a good temperament. Even Brian Fletcher commented on his communication on the field and how he speaks to the the players in a motivational way. No doubt it’ll be a shame if he doesn’t extend, but I can’t shake the feeling of the risk around injuries either. I trust the club to make the right call if the calls in their hands

Metcalf’s general kicking game is on par with Boyd or better imo

It makes sense for Metcalf to test the open market. Johnson used to do the same, and he was a homegrown talent. It makes sense even more now, seeing as the deal wasn't done a few months ago. If you get close to November, it makes sense for his management to hold off and test the market.

Now, to re-sign him, it will likely stretch our cap a lot more. Or another club comes up with a ridiculous offer.

The clubs that don't have stability in their halves and need a halfback will be our main concern. At least from a football perspective, we will be more appealing than a few of them.

Outside of football, there is only so much the club can do if they do decide they need to be closer to family.

The NRL has been putting up videos of all of the teams' 2025 tries. Metcalf featured a lot for us. Yes, he has some flaws; all of our halves are not the finished product. At the moment, Metcalf was given the opportunity and made the most of it. His support play was big for us, helping us finish off opportunities.

I posted a couple weeks asking questions around Hansen leaving. Hansen's partner worked as a teacher aide with my wife. The school farewelled Hansen's partner at the end of last term as she was moving back to Aussie to "set up their home". I am not sure where in Aussie that was. My wife told me Luke staying here in NZ until April, but that April doesn't make sense to me as that is near the start of the season. I know for his fact his partner has gone back. I was asking if there was any news around him, but haven't heard anything.
