Recruitment Warriors 2026/2027 Recruitment & Retention

I think there’s so much going on behind the scenes currently with contracts easily broken by just agitation for release or clubs releasing players and I wouldn’t discount eels? If Pezet was to stay at storm with eels thinking they’ve got him, Dylan Walker could have a word and tell him that it’s a good place to be? They’ve got some coin and looking for a five eighth
he's said in the past he's a 7 and that's where he wants to play. I can't see him leaving to play six somewhere else unless maybe they were a genuine premiership threat that year. All clubs (Melbourne, bronx, penrith, sharks, dogs, roosters maybe) all have their halves pretty much sorted.

Got to hope that he's built up some goodwill with us supporting him through various injuries. He was vocal when he resigned last year that we wanted someone to back him and Webby + Wahs did that big time.

Appreciate talk is cheap and things change but this was only last year:

Wasn’t that pre-baby? Raising a kid away from family can be difficult, can change everything depending on how the mother is coping. I’m just hopeful his manager is pushing for something like an extra $100k pre November. I say give the lad his $1m contract from next season & move on. He’s worth it.

Double edged sword too, as great as can be he could keep picking up these injuries and the season is kaput. Could happen with anyone but you can’t not recognise his track record

If that happens we’re fucked! Guy can’t handle the step up
To be fair to Boyd though he averaged a try assist a game & won 50% of games. Coupled with that Egan only played 4 of his 9 games and Jackson Ford got suspended for the last 3 games of the regular season. He’s a year younger than Metcalf has a far superior kicking game and his game is going to age better than Metcalf’s

Yes that was pre-baby, agree it can all change if mum is home alone and not enjoying life. We've been here before :)

Agree - within reason give him what he wants. the market's pretty thin for replacements of his caliber who are pumped to come and live in NZ!

I can see two reasons why we only offered Met the 2 year extension to end of 2028 and not a longer contract.

1. We don't want to pay top dollar long-term for someone that may spend a lot of time off the park injured or doesn't come back from injury the same player.
2. We have so many good younger halves in our setup and in 2027/28 the likes of Jett and Inch will be in the top team somewhere so in 2029 Met may not be needed and his money would be required to sign those younger halves on upgraded deals.

I would be very happy if we signed Met on a 2 year extension to end of 2028 on $1m a season. From the clubs point of view it is sensible.

If Met pushes for a longer deal definitely look at a 3 year extension but it carries risk. Other clubs who are desperate for halves will give him the longer contract and maybe more money which is a problem for us. If Met really appreciates the club and wants to give back he will sign the deal with us. And a 2 year extension means that in 3 years he can move his family back to Sydney while his child is still young and sign one last big contract at 29 years old.

It is impossible to predict the future. Will Jett be our long term 7 with Inch at 6, who knows. Will Jett really commit to us long-term? We can only guess at that. Maybe Metcalf stays here long-term and brings his young family up here and we use Inch at fullback. Impossible to know how this will all develop and how those young players will develop.

At least we have Metcalf for next year and that is the year we really need him as our young halves are not going to be ready yet.

We have figured out that Boyd is elite at cup level but doesn't quite have it at NRL level. I for one, an very pleased we have so many young elite halves in the system now and things look very promising for the future.

Further to my last post since we know Boyd is not the future, we need to start Jett in the halves in Cup even if that means Boyd misses out. I can't see Jett wanting to spend the year coming on for 10 minutes off the bench each game. We need to see what he can do and get him ready for first grade.
The same problem you have with Metcalf is the same problem you will have with Jett. If he becomes an elite half he’s not sticking around
