NRL NRL Round 5 2026 Discussion

Need injuries to Clearly, McLean, Edward's and Yeo to make it a fair comp my bro.
it's also round 5. Extrapolating 22 weeks out based on the first month of footy is a mistake that is made every year. This time last year Penrith was in the shits, Melbourne was the team that looked unstoppable and there was no way Brisbane was making the top 4 let alone winning the premiership. A lot can happen in 22 weeks. IMO we have to wait until at least wait at least origin before we know the lay of the land as it relates to likely premiership stakes.

I just think it's a Patriots 2007 situation.

Let them go, they can't get any higher on the ladder than they are already lol.

Someone just needs that one miracle game to take them down in the GF.

they are not going to go through the season undefeated. They are human too (even if they don't look it atm) and will slip up like the rest of us mere moral teams have. I just hope it is us that gives them that reality check.

Yea I'm not meaning undefeated regular season. More just at the moment, it would take a pretty major upset for them not to be in the Grand Final. Just have to beat them there

People thought the same about the 07 pats.

I would argue that Penrith look far more assured of a perfect season. No one can match them, toe to toe.

Will take some crazy voodoo magic to topple those kitties.

Origin period is the killer. Pats weren't forced to play without Brady haha.

When they lost last year and people were calling it the end of a dynasty, it's just a different dynasty. An unbeaten run is bloody cool but you know so is winning 8 out of 10

That's true.

It will be an interesting test of the robustness of the original system Webby had based ours on.

Like the 07 pats, it's all meaningless if you dont win the big one at the end of the season.

For every example, there is a counter example: ie Dragons 2018 won their first 6 straight. We were actually the first team to beat them that year (round 7 at MSS) before they subsequently crashed out of the top 4 and limped out of the finals pretty easily. This scenario could just as easily happen if the Riff have the injuries that we did last year, causing them to come back towards the pack of chasing teams.

Key thing is you and I don't know what will happen: Penrith 2026 could end up being the 07 pats or they could flame out towards the end of the year. Either could happen and really we don't know for sure what will eventuate. At the moment, Penrith look unstoppable and premierships aren't won in March/April. All it takes is another serious injury to Cleary for them to become mortal again imo.

So I'd rather let things play out and reserve judgment rather than buy into sensationalist narratives like Penrith going undefeated or Wests suddenly becoming a premiership contender because they managed to beat us in a game we should have won. 23 weeks is a long time in rugby league.

Lucky for us we have them right after origin 1 and with this form could expect yeo, edwards, Cleary, To’o and martin to be out.

Wonder if mclean is eligible under the new rules would love to see him out too
