Alot of big ticket items (Olympics.. etc) want a free to air component to their content. More eyes on the product.
I wouldn't be surprised if part of the NRLs broadcasting aspirations for NZ would be a free to air component. Thus, three might end up playing same role as channel nine in Aus.

how much did you get it for? It's about $500/year on their site now. I just have skypod on my TV bought 15 years ago, do I get like a google pod or amazon pod to play sky sport now app?? might cancel my sky i only use youtube and sport. thx
Speaking of free to air, remember when the Warriors games used to be on TV3 (I think it was live in the 90s, with ad breaks)?
And then later on Prime (delayed).
I don't think I could have followed the Warriors and Black Caps as a kid if I wasn't able to watch them on free to air TV. My two favourite NZ sports teams to follow to this day.

Yeah my first introduction to the warriors was Graeme Hughes yelling “Odell Manuel!” on Sunday afternoons on 3. Think downtown Clint Brown did the pre and post match. They usually lost.
But that was the thing, you turned on the tv, 3 things to pick from, a warriors game looked super exciting in that environment.
Now if a kid turns on the tv, straight to a streaming service or YouTube
