I don’t wanna play.

They were the four words that terminated Terrell May’s tenure at the Sydney Roosters.

Despite playing all 27 games this season, the Roosters last week told a shocked May he was free to leave the club immediately, despite signing a $950,000 contract extension in April.

While the Roosters won’t comment publicly, this masthead has been told that May’s carefree attitude towards rugby league - and the club - was the catalyst towards his shock exit.

Sydney Roosters hierarchy demand their players are fully invested and some felt May wasn’t totally committed to the club and the game.

May also wielded some influence over a number of young players at the club – another concern for Roosters officials.

The club has no ill-feelings towards May.

Concern for May’s future at the Roosters started in September when he conducted a media interview during the finals campaign.

He said: “Sometimes I just get ‘I don’t wanna be there and don’t wanna play’.

“I gave it away twice, when I was 18 and then when I was 20. Both times I just didn’t want to play anymore. I get like that throughout the year as well.

“It’s a weird feeling. I don’t think many people experience it where one week they love the game and go on the TV screens and the next week they don’t want to be there at all.”

The comments set off alarm bells at Bondi.

One of the Roosters’ best players in 2024, May is well-liked at the club and doesn’t drink alcohol.

“I was devastated for him,” Roosters teammate Angus Crichton said last week.

“He is literally straight as an arrow. He doesn’t drink, he is a really good guy and he hasn’t done anything off the field to warrant this.”

May was subjected to hurtful and incorrect accusations about why he was told to leave the club.

He also said in the interview: “Sometimes I just feel I could quit, like in a day. It sounds a bit weird, but I get those thoughts sometimes where I’m just like ‘Is this really for me? I’m very grateful to be where I am and play with the Roosters, but rugby league isn’t the whole of me.’

“Then you just look at the bigger picture. You need to support your family and I couldn’t do it without footy. I have aspirations to take the club to the grand final and play for NSW.”

May represented Samoa in their two-Test series against England in England.

Yeah it sounds a little awkward and contradicts himself innocently a little bit but the way he plays should do all the talking needed.
Roosters either want to punt him to get more cap space or maybe he is like this behind the scenes.
My bet is on cap space.

Have seen that they tried to shift Brandon Smith on with no joy, likely because of his injury into next season so this is what’s likely happened to May. I agree it’s probably cap space and think there’s potentially some truth to that Ben Hunt to roosters rumour. They’ve got Sam Walker out for a swag of next year

What a joke if that’s true.
How did he actually play week in week out? He was one their best, he absolutely killed it this year.

Bizzare story if true. And then May is surprised he's been let go?
Not many people are going to want a player like that, essentially turns up when he feels like it.
You'll get a great year out of him and then a shit year.

Imo he's signed his own death warrant regarding contracts - no one's going to sign him on big bucks or a big contract knowing it can turn to shit at any minute.

Poor, poor move by him imo

Nothing post really, but an interesting one this morning on the titans forum about SJ looking chummy with Kini at Kiwis. They say you just know they’re going to try and lure him back to Auckland. Anyone think there’s a possibility? Tuaupiki seems like a similar player

Yeah I get that point of view.
I believe he was just being brutally honest and voicing things you really shouldn’t say publicly, doubts etc.
Like I said he contradicts himself saying he wants to play for NSW and win a premiership a minute later.
Looking after his family is the most important thing so making 450k a year or 80k labouring I would take a punt on him continuing to play.
Getting rid of a player over an interview when he was one your best players that year is insane imo.

Pretty sure this won't have a bearing on his next contract. He'll get good money wherever he lands.

He might have been trying to express some sort of mental health issue with motivation. Probably shouldn't have done it out loud in hindsight.

They're obviously wanting to rebalance their cap and probably have a target in mind...

However I've found in my professional life working with Australian's... expressing or verbalising you venerability or self doubt never goes down well in the long run.

Sounds like May needs some help rather than a kick to the curb.

Hope this doesn't impact him too much and his next club treats it seriously rather than "our environment will be enough to sort him out."

Yes some people are just lazy but a lack of motivation and inconsistent motivation can also be signs of something deeper.
