NRL NRL Expansion

NZWarriors.com

Appreciate the name and the relevance to PNG but with the Waikato Chiefs, could be confusing when they play here.
Worst case scenario is RNZ/TVNZ announcers might need to specify PNG/Waikato or more likely NRL/Super Rugby when talking about which Chiefs in a "just to be sure you idiot audience understand" basis.
But I doubt the public are stupid enough to get the two confused, especially when talking games/results. Don't think anyone believes the Warriors play Super Rugby or the Crusaders play in the NRL, for instance.
I mean, no one freaked out when there was the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in the NRL and the Natal (or whatever they were) Sharks in Super Rugby...

Some people are idiots though- the genuine confusion plenty of Aussies had when Wendy’s (burgers) launched thinking they’d already had it for years with the ice cream chain. But if people don’t care enough to know the difference they’re probably not your market anyway

Come round to my place to watch the chief game in the weekend…

You turn up on Saturday night when I expect you on Sunday. 🤣

99% of people will be ok, but…

The Natal sharks and the Cronulla sharks were both around prior to super rugby going international. This is a new team where in an ideal world you choose a different name to operate in the same market don’t you?

Evander Holyfield revealed deals for (l-r) Taulima Tautai, Joel Tomkins and Liam Farrell

Wigan Warriors trio Liam Farrell, Taulima Tautai and Joel Tomkins have signed new deals, which were revealed on social media by former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield.

Holyfield, 54, had mistakenly messaged the Super League champions last week while trying to include NBA basketball team Golden State Warriors.

England international Farrell, 26, has signed a five-year deal.

Tautai, 29, signed a three-year deal while Tomkins, 30, signed for two.

All three players were part of the Wigan side which won the Super League title last season and then beat Cronulla Sharks in February's World Club Challenge.

"It is important, not only on the field but off it as well, that we secure the future of our key players and Liam, Joel and Taulima are three of those," Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan said., external

CTE got him first on the first go around, but the 2nd attempt was "the real deal."

The decision to name Papua New Guinea’s new NRL franchise the “Chiefs” has sparked a cross-code clash, with New Zealand Rugby seeking legal advice to protect its Waikato-based Super Rugby Chiefs brand

NZR confirmed it has contacted the Australian Rugby League Commission and is “working in good faith toward an outcome that works for all parties.” The ARLC, which trademarked “PNG Chiefs” specifically, reportedly believes it is on firm legal ground 📑

Shared team names aren’t new - the Blues and Hurricanes are used by multiple sports across Australasia - but NZ Rugby is focused on protecting the Chiefs trademark in Australasia, where our rights date back to the team's inception, when Super Rugby began in 1996.

Nek minute it creates a farcical situation when the PNG Chiefs, become known as the PNG Chiefz … remember the Football Kingz anyone …
Tweak the PNG side to The Chieftans if they have to.

Interesting to listen to recently commentary out of Australia, and the enthusiasm for ChCh to be the 20th team by various parties is pretty compelling. It’s probably a case of when not if. The recent bidders probably don’t fill the NRL with much enthusiasm, I sense, but it’s the commercial aspect which might be the challenge.
The sponsorship dollars announced by The Bears for their sleeve (1 Mill) and their shorts have been eye openers. It certainly sets the benchmark for the front of jersey value.
I’d like to think the NRL would also front end any new team out of ChCh for the first 3 years with an exec team working along side them to take the reigns.

Think the fact they are likely using the exact same colour scheme makes it a bit more understandable but there’s plenty of shared sport monikers that I doubt it will confuse anyone
I read some article today on Code Sports and it seems the NZRU is mostly ok with the double up in name but is going to dig their heels in over the logo and colours.

The NZRU look like absolute sooks recently. They always seem to be complaining about some nonsense instead of accepting that times are changing and they need to adapt or die.

One team plays league, the other plays Union. One is from Hamilton, the other from PNG. There is zero chance of the two getting confused.
