Webby said Boyd wasn't playing because the other 2 have been doing well tmm is a great utility especially if taine covers for cnk this could be a blessing in disguise especially after sliding a little

Regardless of who i would pick in the halves - I wanted to post that TMM may have the inside running to be named at 7. He played there last year and has been our 14 the past month. The fact he was picked at 14 ahead of other options means his stock is reasonably high and he is someone Webster is looking to get into the team. Maybe.
You're not wrong, I think I would prefer Boyd for his kicking game.

But TMM is a Webby favorite. He been the number 14 the past couple months, with out any evidence to support that being a good decision. Boyd has more utility value than TMM in that he can play hooker and has done at first grade level for the Titans (has started at hooker in some games), the only secondary position TMM can play effectively is fullback (not a position you carry back up on the bench for usually, especially when RTS and DWZ have experience there)

So really Boyd should have had that utility spot on the bench.

This tells me Webby believes TMM is too good to leave out of the 17.

Boyd has minutes, but no starts at Hooker (including Q Cup & Colts grades).
Secondhand info but Boyd was the guy getting the most minutes at Halfback in the recent open training. No mention of him in at dummy half but that would be interesting to hear confirmation of who was sharing, if any, minutes alongside Egan & Healey in the role out of TMM/Boyd

Started this pre-season game

Also named to start in QLD cup here

Also this about him playing hooker

The Cows identified him to play hooker minutes next year as well

So he would obviously be the better option to have that utility role off the bench the past few months

But the bottom line is Webby clearly loves TMM. I think that's being overlooked here.

Loves him so much
And Tmm hasn’t got a contract for next year

Considering CHT has shifted to Centre mid game before & played middle (albeit in a huge hiding to the Titans) as well, I'd call it a tie in terms of versatility between him & TMM.

Splitting hairs here, but just for the sake of it....

I gave it to TMM because he can genuinely play both halves positions and CHT is a rubbish seven.

Same deal with Fullback.

True versatility is surely edged out by spine positions over all the others you can chuck a bloke in.

Just for the sake of it. Imo TMM is a rubbish 6 and was better at 7.
Outside SJ at 6 he went missing and was much better at 7

You're one step ahead of the RLP with this one as their preseason records only going back to 2023.

But reverted to the bench prior to kickoff in this instance.

I'm not sure that Webster loves TMM. He dropped him for CHT last season and hasn't chosen to give him meaningful minutes this season. I think it more of a case of him being risk adverse by picking TMM at #14 ahead of Healey

I don't think that's really relevant? CHT is just a superior player to TMM

We're talking about TMM vs Boyd here (well at least i was anyway)

We're not talking about CHT or Healey

Boyd/CHT, easy money. CHT is having a really solid year.

We don't have the cattle to suddenly start blitzing teams like the Broncos or Phins. We need to try our best to work back towards our grind game, and TMM's kicking game just isn't up to FG halfback standard to implement that game plan. We have also been blitzed in the middle the last two games without Barnett, who was there getting us up field with AFB in the TMM/CHT combo period last year. So Boyd's kicking game is needed on that point alone as we can't replace Barnett.

No easy games in the NRL of course, but atleast a few teams not travelling too well to start off for the pairing if picked.

Niukore and Ford were extremely poor last game both in terms of output and discipline. Our boppa's need to hunt as a pack and Fish needs support from his bookends.
Our whole pack was poor tbh. Laban looked like he may have played too many minutes as he was fatiguing hard, Shibsake's first try a direct result of him not getting off the line.
Most talk on the halves make up but really if we dont get back on track up front it wont really matter

We lost Niukore early against panthers but I thought Ford was disappointing in that one as well. Wonder if the quietness of JFH is a factor coupled with the loss of Barnett, who I would imagine be more than comfortable sending a rocket where needed. For all I know JFH is that person too and Capewell I think would be the same to dish out a serve where needed. Agree though that we need more out of our pack, Clark has been good though

Is it just perception that JFH is being "quiet"?

I mean he's pretty much hitting his same numbers for runs metres that he has all season and has lead the tackle count the last 2 games, so i dont think he's guilty of shirking on effort.

This is where the difference between him and losing someone like AFB was always going to be highlighted in that AFB can single handedly carry a pack while Fish works better as being part of and complementing a unit. Losing Barney from that unit was a blow no doubt, but i think the impetus is really on Ford and Niukore to not only step up....but to do it consistently.....which is probably where they struggle....Niukore moreso

Thought Egan was a bit disappointing against broncos too and has had a quiet middle part of the season

Tbh it seems like S.O.O is the worst thing to always happen to Egans season

Starts off strong every year but the moment he gets talked up in the S.O.O mix his season falls off a cliff ;)
The performance of the team against sharks with Healey must have given them some contemplation. Sharks haven’t been travelling well either so perhaps can’t read too much into that. Egan becomes really important for Boyd and one positive could be a familiarity between Clark and Boyd from titans with how important he’s been to Metcalf
