Not sure if posted elsewhere but found this podcast quite an interesting listen about his time at the Warriors.

Was always quite critical of the Elliot era. But quite shocking to hear how dysfunctional the team dynamic truly was before he got there. To come to training 10 kgs overweight in the 2013 preseason after the awful end to the 2012 season where we lost like 8 games straight is just extraordinary to me. I would have thought that they would be hyper motivated to right the wrongs of the previous year by ripping in during the pre-season. Actually makes me think that getting as close to finals we did in 2013 was actually quite the achievement.

Rumour:
When Elliot spoke to the players , he was way over the top - it was like a brain surgeon speaking to scaffolders - nothing against these folk
Should the players as pro footballers have been the equivalent of nurses in the analogy though?

We’re the players at Aussie clubs able to take on surgeon speak?

Matt Elliott could always articulate well and talk the hind leg off a donkey.

He knows his shit but i always felt he was better suited to big picture stuff - Football and pathway development than actual hands on. Would be great in that role.

Interesting to hear some of the disfunction a few were getting up to off the park, id assume in reference to the Red Bull crowd (id assume doing a lot more than just red bull as well)

Such a disfunctional yet interesting period that 2011 -17 period. We went through 5 coaches in 6 years. And i guess all of them had strong points in some areas but obviously way lacking in others.

Id love to hear the nitty gritty behind the scenes stuff that went on in that era, which is why the inevitable SJ book should be good, who was probably in the best position of anyone to reflect on that whole period.

This Life Coaching role Elliotts doing now sounds really interesting

I follow Houston Rockets in the NBA basically because it's where Steven Adams is.

Houston has to rebuild after Harden couldn't deliver the championship and the rebuild was crappy while getting some good young players.

They got a new coach last year I think and this comment from a player is relevant to this thread I think

Jalen Green - shooting guard talking about Ime Udoka...

"We have the talent, but he was the head of the snake. Coming in and bringing the dog out of us, and bringing that culture to us, and getting guys to play hard.

That first year (last season), he taught us all a lesson. If you're not going to play hard, you're going to come out. That's habits we had to break, as young guys on the worst team in the NBA."

They are now 2 in the west and finals bound after a few stink years. Is Webby the guy?

The interview suggests to me that Bluey played a bigger role than initially thought in our subsequent decline and culture problems post-2011. The sorry state of the club football department in 2012-2013, both on and off-the field, that ME describes is nothing short of astonishing. I also remember Sam Tomkins mentioning this lack of professionalism in another interview he did in England post his wahs career. I can't imagine Ivan tolerating such a culture during his tenure until 2011, so I have to assume that Bluey has to take the rap.

One character that I wonder about in all of this is Simon Mannering. Maybe he should have done more to arrest the horrid culture and establish a "no dickheads" policy as captain. I can't imagine JFH tolerating this if he had been captain back then. On the other hand, maybe this is way too harsh on Simon. It would have been tough for any great leader to lead this side, when so many of them were clearly certified f**ckwits who lacked any self-awareness.

In any case, the bloke deserved a premiership. Would not have blamed him if he had left us for a premiership ready club like the crooks or Melbourne. The fact that he stayed and remained a one club man is something I will never forget. If only there were more like him, how different would our fortunes have been during that 2011-2017 period.

Yup. Felt like Luck and Mannering were the only guys putting in 100% those years, and seem to be silent leaders. Even Maloney couldn't be fucked that year and wanted out, can imagine him being a bad influence..

I think a guy we can easily point the finger as an example is Manu Vatuvei, he was a legend and no doubt the Pasifika guys would have looked up too him - Which was basically all our juniors. Captained a few games that year too. He was a well known joker and not a great role model on reflection from what we all know now, got done for the red bull stuff the following year also. Sort of sticks out to me as a major issue from leaders in the squad who should be setting examples for the young blokes. It's hard to imagine JFH, Barnett and CNK out there doing that shit..

I thought Luck basically retired at the end of 2011. I consider him to be part of the Cleary era (2006-2011) where we had sustained success as opposed to the post-Cleary Armageddon (2012-2017). It really was Mannering all by himself during those dark years. The poor man had to tackle for 5 forwards for most of that period.

Nathan Friend basically had to beg Bluey to do some defensive training from what I recall from an interview with him....

Tough gig for any coach coming here, especially back then, all the talent in the world with no resources for development, probably still struggling with it today.

Brought a few memories back, his talk about the U20's success not transfering to 1st grade, that was always a sore point around here.

Smart man Matty, I guess he did the best he could with what he had.

I recall Bluey saying at an interview once "We'll just score more than the other mob". That's certainly the attitude the team played with. Almost like the modern day titans. Wayne Scurrah has a lot to answer for: he should have fought harder for Cleary, who by all accounts wanted to stay, when he was being pursued by Penrith. Maybe we'd have won a premiership by now with a halves combo of SJ/Nathan Cleary.
