Coach Bio

A member of the St. George Dragons 1992, Matthew Elliot was forced into an early retirement due to injury and joined the Dragons coaching staff as an assistant.

Elliot would follow Dragons head coach, Brian Smith, to the Bradford Bulls in the new English Super League in 1996, where he would ultimately become head coach the following year.

He would lead the Bulls to winning the 1996 Super League Title, and a grand final appearance in 1999, losing to St. Helens. Elliot winning himself coach of the year in each of those seasons.

In 2000, Elliot joined the Canberra Raiders as an assistant to Mal Meninga, before taking the head coaching role in 2002. He led the Raiders to four finals appearances in his five-year tenure.

Joining the Panthers in 2007, the Panthers would finish last putting his position immediately under pressure. He would go on to get his contract extended in 2009, but was sacked in 2011.

Elliot joined the Sydney Roosters in 2012, again working under Brian Smith as an assistant coach.

In 2013, Elliot became the Warriors head coach, holding the job until mid-2014 when he was sacked after a 2-3 start to the year.

Elliot joined the St. George Dragons as an assistant coach to Anthony Griffin in 2021, and moved to a new created role, Leadership Culture and Mindset Coordinator, from 2022.
