Just starting to sink in Luke is out for most of the season, dam shame, the Rog/Meltcalf/Ford edge was building quite nicely, just hope TMM and Chanel are up to the standard we've started out with. They could be better, but the footy gods have been cruel again, kia kaha brother Luke, see you in round 18 or whatever for the run home to minor prems.

Very cruel, back him to overcome this though.

Wouldn't be putting any money on a return this season, hopefully get himself right, another big pre-season and go again.

Agreed, unfortunately for Luke don't think we'll see him back in FG this season.

He doesn't have a mortgage on the jersey at this stage of his career, and if we make the finals either CHT or Martin will have spent 3/4 of the season in that role.

TMM starting the season, to coming back from injury version was very different after his injury.

Hope Luke heals well and gets a full pre- season in ready to go next year.

🤔

In the Metric system thats about 82kg
Luke listed as 86kg. TMM 87kg.

Kalyn Ponga 92kg, Shaun Johnson 91kg, Nathan Cleary 92kg

There is a range of weights for halves in the competition, as there always has been.

For example, even just back a few years some of the greats like Brett Kenny, Kevin Walters, Terry Lamb were lighter than Luke is currently.

Generally it is about technique and attitude if they are going to be reasonably successful at defending in the line - SJ and Ponga are basically the same weight. Being a good fullback doesn't always translate to being a good 6 or 7. The defensive workload is a lot higher and having to make 20 tackles front on at a high effective rate is a lot different to 4 or 5 attempted and making 1 or 2 of them.

Luke's injury wasn't from his defensive workload though, just an unfortunate incident. Problem he has is that at 25 years old he hasn't been able to put together a consistent run of games at a high level ie NSW cup/NRL. Been plenty of players like that over the years. Hopefully he can come back stronger and his body can stand up to the rigours of the game.

Agree with most of this.
Kenny Walters & Lamb played in the time of much smaller guys.
Players today are much bigger stronger & faster.
As you say an unfortunate incident.
Hopefully he makes a full recovery & comes back even better,

I see it from a different angle, Metcalf does not run straight seemingly avoiding getting smashed (smart choice of course from a personal point of view) and in trying to run around severely cuts down space for others outside him.
TMM rarely tries to run around, he creates space for others to flourish if they are able by taking the line on. I believe he'll go very well with RTS in that respect. Generally he's not a highlights guy.
fair enough, thats a good point. Didnt consider it from that perspective!

How much are we missing this guy? He was the X factor.
In the last couple of years it’s 83% win record with him- 35% without.
the boys were something like 60% completion for a while there today. no amount of x factor is fixing that, OR stopping the 30 odd missed tackles.
all attacking shape has just gone out the window as well, what the fuck is going on?!

i do agree though, it would be nice to have him back. poor old TMM not showing much.

We need him back in the same way that we need any (younger) guys who aren't just the current lot to breathe some life into the side.

I don't see how Metcalf fixes defensive/discipline issues, or gets the bench used effectively, but it's not like Metcalf not having a great passing game could be any worse than what is going on atm attacking wise.

He would have been good for at least one or two individual tries though, which when we have had a draw, and two games decided by less than 6 points, could have been the difference between a win or a loss, but we would still be in just about the same position and with the same issues, albiet with maybe another win on the board to feed into delusions that we could do something of note this season.

Is it a concern though that he doesn’t seem to be able to string too many games together without a serious injury?

To be fair, his broken leg was a freak accident. I can't say I've seen too many injuries as the result of leg to leg contact.
But was sent to america to change a running style that was contributing to to hamstring issues, then came home and did the opposite one a few weeks later
