Now the dust has settled I'm a bit sad he's gone, going to miss his speed racing away for all those tries. Oh well, we'll always have those four months in 2025.
Geez, remember when we signed him in 2021 and thought we could have got him early off the Sharks in 2022 when they left him in reserve grade? The fans have had the good memories of the first half of 2025 in the 5 years he has been a part of the Warriors narrative.

To quote Tom Petty, the waiting was the hardest part with Luke. And his obsession with the number 7. Maybe he's a bit on the spectrum, like those guys who are obsessed with triangles.

My man SJ doing his best to help his boy, he had to ditch the team first card and play the family card, when it’s never about the family (compassionate release exit the chat), it’s about himself, and it did play out like a circus too, the club just handled it like an absolute pro.

I agree it’s a win win for everyone, it’s business and move on

yep, SJ very much a Met Gala guy - he needed to thread the needle on this

Judging by what has happened with Luke, I would say if he didn't do his ACL last year, he would have signed for a Sydney club for next year anyway. When you have a long injury history, out for 10 months with an ACL and get offered a good extension by the Warriors, a club he's been at for a while, where he was our 7 until injury.. Teams going good.. Probably no one else was offering the same money.. Why wouldn't you sign that? Would be a huge call to back your 2026 season to get a better contract. Imagine another injury hit season. "Sorry babe, let's do a couple more years then go home."

2026 rolls around, Boyd takes your spot with both hands, and the team is looking better than last year when you were playing your best. You come in, you're not top dog in the halves, play shit, get injured again. Finally recover, and you're on the extended bench. Fuck.

Your manager reaches out - "Luke, there are some desperate teams out there atm. I can get you a longer deal at home, on the same money. Let me know if you want to do something." The wife would love nothing more than to move closer to her family to help with the baby. Fuck it, let's do it. Happy wife, happy life.

Honestly, that's how I see this come about. It's about going home, because he couldn't get the contract he wanted earlier. I get it, and at least it's been sorted without us carrying any of his contract and we have other plans anyway.

In all seriousness, SJ is right.

Best thing for everyone is to move on.
Yeah, players dont get their noses put out of joint like fans do, they know the short term nature of this business so generally are pretty supportive of each other.

He's been upfront with his reasons, and while ive never seen him as a game managing 7 the fact he's willing to back himself to this extent in how he sees himself and what he wants in the game isnt the worst trait to have.

We still got him for the rest of this season (so far) and its really been that depth thats been the Warriors hallmark this year....at some point we're going to need him.

I do sort of agree with Andrew Johns in that finals are about stepping up and owning those moments, Tannah last year in the finals looked a bit deer in the headlights but the confidence he's playing with this season it could be a different story. Metcalf's never played finals so while hes displayed clutch attributes its also a wait and find out at the pointy end of the season.....going to be fascinating watching this season unfold.

Nonsense. SJ identifies with Luke and his story. Have you memory-holed SJ to the Sharks?

Out of the horses mouth, its not team first. We can speculate and have opinions but as a couch coach, you cant discredit what a player says...

I did find it interesting though that a couple of weeks ago he had Demetric and Leka on his show and it was a completely different take. He was talking about the incredible culture and how those guys want to be Warriors for life, put team first etc. He was definitely torn between not biting the hand that feeds him in the Warriors and his loyalty to Metcalf.
I think he is right though that it has ended up being the right outcome for everyone.

100% especially with his relationship with the club. I think some are confusing loyalty to the club with loyalty to Luke. Luke was the clubs starting halfback right up until he wasnt. I dont think SJ would have been banging on about dropping him for Tanah, that makes the organisation look bad.

I wonder if it's a bit heart breaking for some, realizing that these guys are first and foremost doing a job.

A very well paying, limited time only, job.

I am glad he has got his future settled. If he wasn't happy at the club let him move on, especially if he wasn't prepared to fit for his jersey after such a long lay-off due to his ACL.

The disappointment by fans is how his management team have handled this.

Good luck to him.

For what it’s worth my understanding of how all this went goes like this…
First of all u have to understand that playing halfback in this team is considered a plum job- u have a great coach, get to play behind a great pack which just keeps getting stronger, u get to play on the ball and get a lot of good ball in good spots.
Metcalf and his team knew that and he actually knocked back bigger offers to stay with us with the understanding that he was going to be our pin up number 7 marquee man and he was always expected to come straight back into that 7 jersey once fit.
However once fit he was asked to play 6 but reassured he was still the long term 7.
He gets injured again and when he returns is a bit blindsided to be named on the extended bench- and this time when he asked for reassurance he’s told the goal posts have moved and they want him to play 6 outside Boyd moving forward.
In his and his management’s mind he is a better player than Boyd and I tend to agree with that- the thing is being the better player and the better fit for the team is not always the same thing.
Boyd knows the benefits of playing in a strong system better than anyone coming through the ranks of keebra playing behind one of the best junior packs ever assembled only to struggle at the titans in a poor side which is why he was also willing to knock back bigger offers from rival clubs to stay here where he knows he can play his best footy.
Metcalfs camp on the other hand are thinking this isn’t what they signed up for and his best chance of playing his best footy might be in another system which came with the added bonus of moving the family home.
I don’t really see a bad guy in all of this- all 3 parties had a decision to make and made it
The greatest thing is we had two quality halfbacks both willing to take unders to get the job- that’s a testament to what the club have built in the last few years.

Gonna be more than curious to see how he goes next year for the Dragons.

It would be great to see him achieve his dreams and to see that miserable outfit turn things around.

They did a smart thing cleaning out Flanagan and hiring Daniel Anderson in the Cappy role (pathways and recruitment). Anderson is well suited to finding talent and seeing the game in a novel ways, and obviously his original claim to fame was rebuilding a Warriors club that was in the same position that the Dragons are now. Having him outside of the coaching structure is obviously a good idea with his personality querks.

They will have some pace next year which suits Metcalf's game, he won't have to be the fastest in the team just lively.

Metcalf has a swagger when he is happy. I think he was a great get for the Dragons who needed to show they can attract exciting players still.

I was thinking about Metcalf's motivation's (lately I have been more interested in seeing things from his side now that the circus has been cleaned up).

It was also clear from Andrew Websters appeal to fans that he feels for Metcalf, we all know he was sold on the Warrior lore (our equivalent of the one Ring is being the first to lead the team to a Premiership) it is our precious.
I take it that Metcalf chose the Dragons in the end because he is still looking for that fairy tale, he still wants to be Frodo, not Samwise (ok so that analogy isn't sexy lets say Aragon instead of Boromir) and the Dragons sure do need a hero right now.

The other thing I am enjoying out of all of this is that fans who call Webster Andrew Webster were so wrong it is not funny, turns out he doesn't play favorites, turns out he is not afraid to make the hard calls.

I think it's one of the reasons fan's adopt and adore players they see giving their all. Players who do that tend to be the most revered.

Somebody made the point - Luke gave up the chance of being an icon of the club and will now just be a footnote. That's a bit sad really.

100% on the above coloured text.

You've also highlighted my belief that we will have signed Boyd for a fair contract, that is well in the club's favour compared to Metcalf. I don't think Boyd would have been willing to risk going anywhere else. He has a great thing going, and the foresight to see that you don't meddle with it. Take a solid, sustainable contract and feel like you've won.

The club is in a very good position if Boyd's form doesn't drop off. I like those odds better than Metcalf's odds for success (injury, quality of player in the quality of squad he is heading to), though I do hope he has a good future head of him.
