Player Jett Cleary

I can only judge on the games I have seen him play this year and last year. I think he is close enough to debut this year. There are a lot of other clubs that would already have picked him to start. I am glad we are not throwing him in early but the time is coming near.

And we aren't going to know for sure until he has 5 or 6 first grade games under his belt but he is the most promising junior half I have seen at the club post SJ playing first grade.

Does he has rough edges, yes. But all young players do and they work that out in first grade in their first couple of years. Think Reece Walsh for example, when he played for us you could see how good he would be but he made plenty of mistakes starting out. That doesnt mean we dont pick him and keep him in NSW cup because the level is lower and he wont fully develop until he plays some first grade. If we surround Jet with experience, he will find his feet.

I remember seeing him picked as 19th man earlier in the season so they must think he is getting close. Then Hansen ended up getting the 6 jumper for 1 game and did well which maybe tells me they see Jett as a 7 only.
Cheers mate 👍

I would love to know what the plan is with Jet because to me he is our number 1 signing priority.

We can build a team around this guy for the next 10+ years.

The things i am curious about are.

1. Does Jett intend to stay here or go back to Penrith when Nathan moves on. If he does want to go back does Webby already know this.
2. When does Webby plan to start introducing him into first grade becauss he looks almost ready to me
3. If we re-sign Tanah and even CHT what effect will that have on Jett, Hanson and co knowing there is no way into first grade without several injuries happening.

Over the next 12 months i can see plenty of clubs throwing money at him.
I do think he’s a priority signing based on the fact he’s a pure halfback besides Boyd on the squad but can’t see him debuting until next season assuming halves are healthy

He's still a full season in Cup away from debuting in the NRL IMO. He is physically still underdeveloped, and there are plenty of flaws to his game.
He shows some promising signs, however, this his first season starting in Cup and needs to be getting in these reps against grown men. He isn't exactly banging down the door to be selected ahead of any of the first grade experienced halves in the squad, and I would be selecting Hanson before him if Chanel was injured.

on what exactly? the 4 try assists he had in 13 games he had last year in nsw cup?

What exactly is making him a 'priority signing'? Who are these 'lots of clubs' that he would already have debuted for in the nrl on the back of his performances last year?

People(fans and media alike) are just enamoured due to his last name. He needs to star in reserve grade before he should even be considered for a first grade berth, let alone 'priority signing'. And you know what, the first game he does actually star, the media will be all over it, and fans will be getting wet asking for him to be in first grade primarily based on the media reports.

He is a good player, but he still has a shitload of development yet to go through before he could even be considered a first grade reality. For any club. There is just a lot of unwarranted pressure on him, just because of his name. Let him be. Let me hone his game in the reserves rather than all this BS talk of a priority NRL signing etc.

Your last sentence let the cat out of the bag Taj.

You are Dave Tagata-Toa.

So true! Being the brother of the best half in the comp doesn't mean you are going to crack first grade. I hope he does develop into something. Easy to forget that many well regarded young halves neve make it ( including those with family pedigree)

Why is he a priority signing when he's already training fulltime & upgraded to top 30 next year? He can't even negotiate with others clubs for another 7 months.
The guy has talent by how did he go against the Roosters & Knights, currently the top 2 sides in NSW Cup?

I think he is a good talent, but at the moment I’d say he sits about 6th on the half depth chart, with a couple good prospects in Thompson and Inch behind him. He’s got some good skills but also areas of his game he needs to improve.

He should get the season in NSW cup to work on his craft. We may lose 3-4 of the halves ahead of him so he might well get a shot in 2027.

Tbf he's already starred in multiple games this year.

But he doesn't have the physicality or consistency to debut in NRL right now.

My biggest criticism is his dummy and run is the most telegraphed thing I've ever seen. He's just not as natural on the field as someone like Jack Thompson. To me, Jett Cleary makes everything look like a lot of effort; his runs, his kicks, his passes etc. He's an 'effort player' but he rips in every week. Whereas Jack Thompson makes everything look a lot more effortless, which to me is a sign of a player who has more control and more potential.

But back to the original point to say he hasn't been a star in any NSW cup games this year isn't quite true. The ShortBall instagram page has him leading MVP of NSW cup based on a similar points system to Dally M.

I am pretty sure there will be several teams who have eyes on him. If you don't believe that, then that is fine I am not going to argue with you about it.

As a long-term fan of rugby league you should be able to look at a player over a couple of seasons when they are developing playing Flegg and then moving into Cup and know if they are likely to be something special or not.

And yes Jett is a priority signing in my opinion (and by priority I am talking players unsigned in key positions beyond 2027 especially with Metcalf's injury concerns and question marks over Tanah).
It is fairly obvious that if Metcalf and Tanah are playing 7 moving forward, Jett will have to leave. They are all 7's unless Metcalf can make the 6 jumper work. Jett looks like a specialist 7 to me and he isn't going to sit in cup for 3 more years.

I am willing to say that he needs more development time this year but I am expecting his NSW Cup output to increase as the season goes on and he becomes more comfortable with his game.

They are going to have to make a tough decision about what to do with Tanah and that will directly impact Jett. I don't envy the people making that decision.

Anyway, let's just wait and see how things go.

Ah yes, a random Instagram page seems like excellent evidence.
lol who I guarantee watches more footy in that competition than anyone on this forum. Actually has one of the larger followings for pages that cover that level.

His stats in his best games this season put him as one of the best players in the competion so far. Are you saying you disagree with that?

Stas from two of his four games this season:
Raiders: 7 TB / 2 LB / 208 kick meters
Jets: 9 TB / 2 LB / 354 kick meters / 23 tackles / 98 run meters

Those are pretty insane stats for anyone, not just a 21 year old. Tracking at an average rate of try assists with 3 across 4 games.

Easily Man of the Match in those two games which would make sense that he would collect maximum points and be near the top in a Dally M point system.

The other two games? the first game of the season where the whole team got pumped with a super inexperienced squad. The other was a close loss where he played averagely but still put on two try assists and kicked for 316m

Right now Boyd is the priority, he's far ahead of Cleary and if Cleary thinks he should be a starter then I think it will be elsewhere.

How’s he been going in nsw cup?
Nicely. Put on a try assist in each of his full game starts.

Held up alright defensively for a lightweight 19 year old averaging 20 tackles and 1 miss for those two starts.

184m kicking in the game Jett was out. And did the goal kicking (3/5)

Connected well with Bishop down that edge, creating alot of opportunities

Once he puts on some size over the next couple years, he's going to be a star imo.
