Player Jett Cleary

I struggle to see Cleary as a Warrior.

He is just a Reece Walsh passing through future star for his home club in my eyes.

That said, you never know, but I think I know why he is here. His father wisely avoided his two sons competing directly with one another - Sofie's choice, an impossible position to be in.

That said, when Ivan moves, or retires, or Nathan moves or quits, then Jett will be gone on the next Compassionate flight out of NZ.
This is how I see it too. Plus Ivan's connections with the club, Webby, etc. Seemed like the best place to send him that wasn't keeping him at the Panthers for his development.

It felt like this as soon as he signed TBH, might have to look back at the media reports but it almost seemed hinted back then too.

I think Jett will become hot property in the NRL and be offered good money off the bat by many clubs. The Warriors and Panthers clearly have the inside running on him. Jett was born here and was a Warriors ball boy. Now he has been a feature in the NSW cup and his development has jumped because of the time put into him here and the complimentary player skill sets we have here too. He has formed close relationships with the next generation of Warriors superstars coming through for the last few years.

What Nathan Cleary had with Kikau, Luai, To'o, Yeo, Martin, Edwards - Well Jett will have with Leiataua, Halasima, Vaimauga, Healey, Laban, B.Neal, Lemana, Kali, Tafua, Salalio, Norris, Ratcliffe, Vake, Tauafiafi-Iutoi etc

What would the opportunity cost of that be if he missed it?

He will be given the keys to the Warriors machine soon. He would almost be foolish even stupid to walk away from that.

The Warriors are entering a golden period - he and his Dad will both know that.

The danger IMO is not Jett choosing to leave, its that we don't want him or see a fit for him.

I don't expect Jett whether he stays or not to be peak Nathan for about another 5 to 6 years of development, success and failures. I'd prefer that to be here though

What makes you think he will ever be on a comparable level to peak Nathan? At his current age, Nathan had 50+ NRL games & a State of Origin series under his beat. Jett may have a very good NRL career ahead of him but if they weren't brothers, they wouldn't be in the same conversation in terms of career trajectory

Seriously this time. I don't predict that he WILL. More that IF he does reach such levels it would take such time.

*Edit. He may actually get better than Nathan due to Nathan having navigated the highs and lows already. All conjecture on my part

The discourse on Jett is interesting it feels like people either love/hate him due to his last name I don’t think he’ll reach Nathan’s heights that’s very rare but I think he can still be a good player in the NRL albeit like a Matty/Joey dynamic

Interesting parallel you illustrate. I've watched Jet a lot since coming here. His running game is superb and his goalkicking at times is brilliant, but a bit inconsistent. If his kicking continues to improve, and his defence, I can see him matching Nathan and even exceeding him possibly.

I remember Nathan's debut. He was a skinny rake. Most unlikely-looking. But in the next year or so he filled out and proved himself.

I don't think he's going to be the Matty John's of the family. He'll be just as talented as Nathan I think. He's on the up.

Nah, Jet Cleary's been carving up in Cup. Was also in Flegg. Nathan wasn't that good 50 games in. Jett will be as good because he's been held back for progression. You cannot judge rugby league on stats alone. Might work on Yugi-oh. But not in rugby league. When Jet does play FG, he won't be 'potential', he'll be hitting the ground running.

50 games in Nathan Cleary was killing it. Jett at this point is not close to what his brother was doing. He’s been playing nsw cup because at this point there are better players in his position not because he’s been held back.

He’s a talented prospect but at this point there are some work ons in his game that need to improve before he’s first grade ready.

He has been good in Cup, but I think carving up is a stretch. Look at the impact TMM had when he played in Cup last year, that’s the impact of an NRL half. Even guys like Illias look a cut above in Cup

lol what even is this comparison. Nathan already looked like a point scoring machine by the time he was 17 in the U20's comp. By the time he was 19 people were talking about his ceiling being higher than Jonathan Thurston's

The compassionate release talk of Jett returning to Penrith etc is a bit premature imo.

This isn't some superstar game changing halfback we have waiting in the wings. He's putting together a good season but he's doesn't have game breaking ability. The important thing to remember is NSW cup is more a development league. The top 7 in try assists in NSW cup are all halves that are under 21 years of age. But he does have the makings of a solid first grade game manager and conductor (similar to Boyd in some ways)

Jack Thompson is the future number 7 of the club in my eyes. Then whether Jett fits alongside him (as they have been doing in NSW cup recently) remains to be seen, although is probably the preferred outcome for the club.

Jett does have goal kicking ability which is important, and Thompson does not, but I guess that matters less if Harry Inch can develop alongside Thompson as a 6. Inch hasn't been goal kicking that great this year but has in the past throughout union.

Amongst all this Boyd/CHT/Metcalf chat, our halves combination for the next 10 years could well some combination of Thompson/Inch/J.Cleary

It’s unfair to compare Jett to Nathan because they are completely different players. Jett has a unique skill set for a half as he is top 10 in tackle breaks and line breaks which are stats that are dominated by outside backs. Even comparisons with Jahrome Hughes are unfair or Munster because both started as outside backs bringing those skills to the halves, where Jett to my knowledge has never been an outside back. Which means Jett is a truly unique prospect

Personally I'm not really trying to compare them but instead to project how good Jett may get over the course of his career. Further to add whether or not that would be here at the Warriors

Was thinking about this the other day when Clark and Ford were making their line breaks against the Phins

Do you think the game has evolved in the last year or so by being quicker therefore having more fractured defence lines that allows more line and tackle breaks?

I think he would want to stay, he knows the systems well, he knows the boys well, been a wahs fan since being a kid, has a affinity with NZ being born here, I reakon hed take up a 3-4 yr deal to try and win a premiumship and after that see what his worth is on the open market with plenty years of footy ahead

I wonder how much weight is put into who else would be in the team eg: Leka, Laban, Demetric, EIT, Bishop as his pack to run off.
