Hi tragics.
@roguei posted a Roger
Tuivasa Sheck short which is the first time ever that a signed player speaks to specific game plan strategy (in this case defence) straight after a big game, which answers directly what was happening for them as a player, how that unfolded in a way we could all see it when it failed, and the player (
RTS) speaks directly to what worked.
This got me thinking about the technical aspects of how the Warriors play and the many posters who have insights into the technical side of the game.
league experts, the fans who use language like A, B, and C defender are welcome to add to this post.
Getting back to the
RTS video short. He pays us fans the respect of explaining that Jamming in was on his pregame list, he certainly did that, which saw Manly overlap him, which in turn generated a lot of vitriol from fans, many of whom cried foul about Roger jamming in.
Often times you will read fans claiming these types of incidences are evidence of Webster being out coached.
In my own voice let me say that is a nonsense. There are well known popular defensive systems in the NRL, Jamming in is one of them....others include sliding and umbrella defence.
All of these systems have risks, all of them are effective if performed well, consistently. Sliding defence for example is vulnerable to dropping a ball back on the inside to an angled runner who is cutting against the grain and changing the angle of attack.
As we saw against Manly, Jamming in is vulnerable to being flanked by numbering up to create an overlap.
The rule of thumb with defence is to choose one system, and stick to it, ours is clearly gonna be jamming in, so get used to it.
And here's a tip on preventing overlaps when jamming in, your fullback should favor the side of the field that is the oppositions strongest attack.
Reason for favoring one side by the fullback is that they cannot realistically line up on both. So in the Manly Game
Charnze should have drifted to our left side where Roger was Jamming in, which means our right side has to take care of itself, but at least they know that, at least they know we have a strong side and they have to D up on their end.
I love that we are jamming in and may be overlapped, coz that at least makes sense of what is happening with our defence when it fails, analysis and making corrections therefore are suddenly very simple and straight forward, qualities that seasoned Warriors fans should be gagging for in the mystery that is our underperformance in the NRL.
Well done Webster for having players like
RTS that have such pre game clarity, I know for a fact that has been missing at this club for decades, most of our poor fools look like they haven't got a clue out there.
