Keen to see you ask wiz for his quote from Helen Clark where he said that she backs iran. Can you follow up on that for me? Thanks
Still waiting for your answer about TPM, or are you running away from answering any questions like Hipkins over the gas crisis?

This is one unpopular prime minister.

Must be pretty confronting for him trying to reconcile why.

Who is the alternative?

Even across the other parties there isn't someone jumping out saying pick me.

I actually reckon Chloe would make a good fist of it, she seems pretty clever, always has data to back up her arguments even when she is arguing for shit that doesn't make sense to the average bloke. Won't get a shot at it anyway.

I thought maybe mark Mitchell seemed OK but then he got married for the 4th time so something not right there.

No point changing unless there is a better option.

What happens at a Bert Potter party Rick, dare I ask
Haha, couple of hundy people there, incumbents and visitors. Generally a good band, plenty of Ganja and Acid.

Bert was dodgy, everyone knew it and was no surprise when he was finally arrested. Disappointing that a number of people there who also had children at Centrepoint were well aware of it but continued to stay.

Mrs Rick always reckoned he was a Sociopath. As usual, she was probably right

Everyone knew he was a pedo but nobody did anything about it? Guess things were different in the 70s, the era of Garry Glitter, Jimmy Savillle, Alan Jones, guys like that.

Probably more fair to say those in the close circles knew
Have to remember that social media in those days consisted of the personal columns in the Truth. Not much else other than Chinese whispers.

Hipkins let slip about Labour’s Covid spending on Newstalk ZB admitting the Labour Government would have gone ahead with many of its spending decisions even without the cover of the pandemic.

The Covid Royal Commission found about half of the $60 billion spent in the name of the pandemic went on unrelated programmes and projects.
Both the Royal Commission and Treasury say that spending pushed up the cost of living and government debt.
In other words, the pandemic became a convenient excuse to spend money on things Labour wanted to do anyway.

This meant that National inherited a permanent structural deficit, and increasing debt and a 1 in 30 year recession. This is not news to those that follow economics.

Now as we face a potential oil crisis due to the Iran conflict, the Government has less ability to cushion us from this global shock, because of what Hipkins did.

They promised in 2017 to keep spending below 30% of GDP. Both Labour and Greens said they would cap it at 30%.

They used the excuse of Covid-19 to load an additional $30 billion of non-covid expenditure and blew spending up to 34% of GDP.

This structurally locked in the recession, economic carnage and has left us vulnerable to future shocks and with less options to respond to the oil crisis today.

And what did we get for the $30b in pet projects that’s crippled us the last few years and leaves us hamstrung now???

10 new hospitals? Auckland Harbour tunnels? 1000 new schools? Buggered if I know?

Can our far lefty lovers explain where the money went that has stuffed NZ up big time?

Bit of context needed here again Wiz.

The Royal Commission did find that around half wasn't tightly linked to public health and its criticism was based on the spending not being timely, targeted and temporary.

Treasury actually backed the early stimulus, especially wage subsidies preventing mass unemployment and business collapse. The problem was extending this out too long.

On the deficit, Treasury has made it clear its caused by multiple things. Covid is one, but ageing infrastructure, cyclone relief, higher interest rates etc etc.

34% of GDP is referring to total government spending.. not the core spending that Labour talked about in 2017.

Can't be argued that they extended the spending too long but trying to say it was $30B on pet projects is misleading.

Good journalism

Except for one tiny... will actually not so tiny problem. He says the previous Labour government allocated money for new chargers. There was never any announcement as to how much of the LETF was to be used for public chargers let alone if they would be AC or DC chargers.

The only problem with that statement is that the Low Emission Transport Fund (LETF) did have over $80 million in it, but it wasn't just for new car chargers.... it also included changing part of the government fleet to BE and hybrid vehicles, research into biofuel tech, marine (the research for the new electric ferries is partly funded by it) and aviation low-emission tech. It was used to study hydrogen refuelling infrastructure and supporting low-emission freight and logistics options. Money was made available for companies who were early adopters to receive grants.

LETF-supported projects included: NZ's first hydrogen truck operated by NZ Post and Fonterra's electric milk tankers and AT's electric buses.

Yes, money was to be used for new public car chargers... but not anywhere near as much as that article suggests.

BTW, IMO, the LETF was one of the best policies of the previous government. I don't like the current "more targeted" approach announced by EECA as that seems too much like out of Trump's "Play Book".
