This is a travesty that Water Safe NZ is losing $1,1m in funding from ACC. Govt needs to get off it's arse and throw them some cash. Plenty of vanity projects out there it could come from

I posted it a while back when I came across it. What I find most offensive is the huge surplus acc makes year on year and they pull something like this that has huge benefits in a country surrounded by water

They'll limp to the next election - maybe even eek out a small election victory like the Bolger government way back - then the knives will come out and it will like the red wedding from Game Of Thrones.
I’m beginning to think he’s going to cost them the next election. His leadership is dipping from poll to poll and I get the feeling there might be a power issue. Winston mentioned recently we got deals done rather than Luxon’s I. Labour were dwindling in 2017 and not quite a like for like situation but Andrew Little stepping aside for the good of the party is something Luxon needs to consider

And then they spend millions on ads warning that having an accident would be inconvenient
I hope I never need them and although it’s dead money going to them if so, self employed people I’ve talked to have said how hard they are to deal with? I don’t know if this is the case but one person I know got injured and their earnings were based on covid years unfortunately and he received an amount that was impossible to live on through that time. I think they expect self employed people to be able to foot a majority themselves, not considering what the person has paid out to them. Not a fan even before learning of their pulling funding for kids learning to swim

Kiwi kids were drowning 30 years ago when i was a kid... Is this an issue that govt can fix?
Yes, I think they can by using the Water Safety Council as their advertising and promotional arm. Kids don't seem to be problem any more, mainly adolescents and adults. The govt wanted to save some lives during covid and was prepared to chuck a few bucks at it.
The drowning rate seemed to be increasing along with the rescues. Thought it was a good point about the school swimming pools as well but didn't talk about the main impediment which was health and safety. Our local primary still has its pool and as far as I know all kids are expected to learn to swim unless they have a note from home otherwise. Our kids learnt in the Opal springs in Matamata. They like their old man still have an inordinate fear of cold water!

Thought you’d be a goer at back beach

As a father of a surf lifesaver at one of NZ’s most dangerous West Coast beaches the lack of funding support SLNZ get is frankly pathetic.

My son has been involved in at least 3 successful rescues, one where against all SL protocol he and another went out almost in darkness to try and locate the swimmer.

From memory he has also undertaken 2 body recoveries and he has only been a lifesaver for 4 years

The number of times he has had to give advice to swimmers to move out of rips etc have been too numerous to count.

Fund them properly and ACC will not be required

Media will go to town on this now they have a sniff. Think Luxon has the wrong approach reading him saying his job as pm is to act as a ceo for the country. Leadership is lot more with the country wanting a figure to provide optimism and all the grandstanding about his accomplishments as a ceo formerly have shown he’s way out of his depth in the political world. His days are numbered, and will be quickly if he’s as naive as this reads in the cut throat world of politics. Bishop has had a shot as far as speculation goes, I’m not seeing anyone else could pose an issue too? Willis’ performance as minister of finance won’t be a great endorsement for her
