Yes we are under threat, our democracy, our environment, our country is under threat from these measures designed to maximise profit, wealth extraction and push the liability and cost onto the public.

That's what this government is. This is the right. This is who they are.

I get confused between Anne Salmond and Anne Hegerty

Is she the one on the Chase or is she the one sucking up a publicly-funded salary at Auckland Uni?

Try addressing the content and opening your mind, I think you'll find Dame Anne Salmond is a national treasure, and 100% correct.
I scanned it. She did make some good points

I got as far as her comments on Fonterra, which made some exaggerated statements that provided a political slant to her opinion piece. I’m happy to read someone’s opinion if they don’t exaggerate or if they use solid facts

Auckland uni is a basketcase, and it’s a bit rich for her to throw stones at other public servants

Banning credit card fees to alleviate the cost of living "crisis" is somewhat of a joke

There will be nothing to stop those businesses who want to increase their prices to cover the cost which means those who have chosen not to make credit card payments in the past so as to avoid the fee will be paying more.

If the Government were serious that would have banned banks from charging businesses the fee.

Nothing more than a political stunt without any benefit to anyone

And the suggestion is for the retailers to put their prices up to cover the extra cost. So the banks still make their money.

Yes and even the people paying cash will have to pay the extra as I am sure the retailers are not going to have two prices 😑

Hammer the banks.

If an average business makes 10% markup for all the time, effort, risk and work then the banks take 2% of it just for a contactless payment… it’s a rip off.

20% of a businesses profit margin for tapping a card instead of swiping it. Really think about the value delivered there and the enormous cost for bugger all value. Extrapolate that across the entire economy and banks are killing us.

Hammer the banks!

Agree, so why doesn’t the Government legislate to stop them applying these fees - if they can regulate to stop the trader then they can legislate against the bank

It’s a look ain’t we great decision rather than a solution to a perceived problem

Agree. But that COULD be seen as over reach interfering with a private company not being paid to provide a service.

Hit the banks with the commerce commission and investigate if 2% of the turnover of a company is fair and reasonable for the service provided (tapping instead of swiping) and if they are using their dominant position in an anticompetitive way.

What’s the actual costs to provide payWave (remember businesses also pay a set fee for the paywave terminal)

Wow - this is actually unexpected. Seems parental input on a child’s development can’t be superseded with just more money:

A rigorous experiment, in a more direct test, found that years of monthly payments did nothing to boost children’s wellbeing, a result that defied researchers’ predictions and could weaken the case for income guarantees.

After four years of payments, children whose parents received US$333 ($557) a month from the experiment fared no better than similar children without that help, the study found.

They were no more likely to develop language skills, avoid behavioural problems or developmental delays, demonstrate executive function, or exhibit brain activity associated with cognitive development.

“I was very surprised — we were all very surprised,” said Greg Duncan, an economist at the University of California, Irvine, and one of six researchers who led the study, called Baby’s First Years.

“The money did not make a difference.”

Who looked after you while you were bludging off the public health system? Hypocrite
My cafe worker kept me alive with my base needs of food despite earning half the pay and not withholding their service when they negotiate pay.

My issue isn’t their skill or ability, it’s the default position to inconvienience the public and use us as Guinea pigs EVERY SINGLE TIME to blackmail above inflation pay increases.

I think teachers and nurses are critical workers and deserve to be paid exceptionally well, but do it without blackmail.
