It’s tough having the lucky country as our neighbour.
Don’t agree. We could be a lucky country as well.

The lefties want the wealth, infrastructure and govt services of Australia but they wont allow exploiting of our natural resources.

We have the second most resources per person behind only Saudi Arabia. The left has CHOSEN for us to be an unlucky country. And then whinge when our youth leave, we have high poverty, our economies shit and people subsist in low paying jobs.

There’s some great projects in the fast track program waiting for consent. Let’s hope they get up.

Being a resident of both countries, the biggest thing I notice is that one is can do and the other is can't do.

We also don’t have a huge iron ore resource, that’s why they’re the lucky country. But then even if we did, Jacinda would have shut it down already.
True, but our coal reserves are 13th in the world so nothing to sneeze about and along with the Southland coal we have some large silica deposits due to our volcanic nature. Big market for Silicon and plenty of money.

Yes but relative to population size Australia is still way ahead of us on coal reserves as well. They’re streets ahead on resources, it isn’t even close.

Certainly is on land area as well. However, my point is that we have a decent whack of resources here which are very underutilised due to factors which are not impediments in Oz. Objectors, ideology and the RMA can be used negatively, bureaucracy etc.
Can you imagine the Captains Call being made on Oil and Gas in Australia like it was here?

She made a number of dreadful captains calls. We’re now importing Indonesian coal due to her stupidity. Worst PM in history

Yup, even longer than that JN. Probably not in as large quantities as now though. Plus the Indonesian stuff is all sub bituminous. Very dirty burning and produces a large amount of CO2.
We'll be importing gas before too long as well. Reserves are getting pretty low
We used to import coal from Newcastle NSW in the 1870
Even when the coal industry was in full production there was coal imports . . In recent years 2020 was the year imports exceeded exports and that coincided with a dry year for the hydros .
In 2015 solid energy was in the poo , it was broken up and sold off in 2017
The lignite deposits in southland are huge but they are as dirty as the Indonesian deposits . To open up this resource would take huge investment from some mining giant but that won't happen as there is cheaper sources elsewhere.
The Waikato mines are still providing coal for Glenbrook and some Dairy companies.
The coal from the west coast is all exported .
