You can blame the last government for a lot of things but the current economic problems have been caused in a lot of ways by the current coalition. Stopping infrastructure projects, public spending etc.Maybe I'm completely blind or not keeping up with the news, but I've been pretty happy with Luxon. None of the alternatives offer anything remotely palatable, so he gets the win by default!
You only have to cast your mind back two years to remember the absolute clusterf*ck that was Labour. The Justice Minister getting arrested FFS. Grant dusting $55b. 3 Waters entrenchment. Golriz getting 5-finger discounts. Covid lotteries for hotels.
The reality is the economy is in such a state because it was strangled too hard by Orr, and it is taking a while to bring it back to life, not helped by Grant
I'm not expecing Luxon to be some sort of Midas. Sometimes you need a leader who is just going to make incremental improvements everyday, however unglamourous they might be. We all know where glamourous got us
I would argue some of it was needed given the size of government but it could have been done differently if you wanted less impact on the economy.
Labor were propping up the economy with spending. Some needed for covid, a little good investment, much wasteful.
We should be able to have a conversation and support a government to spend better even if it has a negative impact on some areas of the economy. Too many people think economy good = government good. Sometimes you have to take your medicine.
