Tricky situation here. Would like to think there’s a compassionate approach being that it sounds like he’s not trouble maker
Looks like at least one current Minister can exercise common sense with Kumar being granted permanent residence. Plus, it would be really hypocritical for NZ to oppose Oz sending 501’s here with no support or links to NZ while sending him to India.

Unfortunately the commonsense was only shown once the issue was out in the public.

Penk had the chance to show compassion months ago instead of letting the kid stress for months!

It’s been reported on the radio that Penk only knew of the case after the media got involved.

‘The Herald has seen a letter from an Immigration New Zealand (INZ) official to Daman Kumar’s representative in December stating that they had delegated responsibility to make decisions on behalf of Penk, and “after careful consideration”, his bid for ministerial intervention in his case was declined.’

Seems officials followed the rules to the letter of the law and common sense prevailed when those in charge found out about it.

If the final decision rests with the Minister or Associate Minister then it is something that can’t be delegated!
Reading it, it appears this was a standard everyday process that didn’t require a final minister decision? Penk is quoted as saying he’s never declined him.

Immigration NZ declined them the opportunity to even appeal to him so they must have the law on their side? It was within their delegated responsibilities.

So they correctly went to the press to get around some daft rules which worked.

Govt funding announced to remove level crossing in Auckland with the CRL about to increase the number of train journeys.

Great move. Speed up traffic while improving safety with 1 incident a week on the crossings. Was only going to get worse with significantly more train journeys.

Win/win here and an example of good, smart govt investment.

The CRL is like buying a new blouse for my wife….. who then needs a contrasting skirt. But she doesn’t have a clutch purse that suits so it’s off to get that. And she doesn’t like the belt that came with the skirt so we need to get one of those. And none of her shoes match the shade of brown of the belt so then there’s a new pair of those.

The CLR…. the gift that keeps on taking, and taking, and taking.

Cast his Penk eye over the situation

This whole saga shows how stupid politics actually is. The left attacking the right because the right were using the processes set out by the left established in a law the left brought in.

And caught in the middle are dozens of other cases of children born to overstayers who will or have been deported that we’ll never know about.

As I see it, the problem isn’t with the way the Minister or the department has acted but with the law itself deporting kids through no fault of their own.

Yet, since this law came in, Key’s government, then Jacinda’s and now Blue Chris have not done anything to change it.

Not a current politician but surely still an affiliate of her previous party, the disdain between Seymour and national continues
Great strategic politics.

If you have Labour to the left and ACT clearly to the right, National appears the populist, centrist party governing for middle NZ.

The Greens feverishly opposed lots Labour did to make Labours policy seem the middle of the road choice by pulling the centre of the debate to their side.

Great politics for ACT to seem extreme and position National central. Behind closed doors they are still best mates knowing they are all ‘playing the game’ for the greater good.

Smart from Labour/ Green last term; smart from National/ ACT this term.

Not sure I quite see the strategy that way. Erica Stanford being a current national politician publicly criticised Seymour recently and with all the negative headlines he was receiving, for them to pile on wouldn’t have been viewed to favourably I wouldn’t think? National seems to be currently driving a wedge between themselves and act and I’ve recently asked the question if there’s a consideration of backtracking from Seymour deputy pm? I think all that national is relying on is no way would Seymour and labour align

$200m of the $3b required - where is the other $2,800,000,000 going to cone from?
