Politics 🗳️ NZ Politics

New research on conspiracy theories:

‘Studies show that it’s not the uneducated – nor is it the left or right of politics – that exclusively buy into these beliefs, but those with some unmet psychological need.

“When people feel devalued, that they don’t belong, that they don’t have a say, or that life is lacking meaning, they’re more likely to see gaps in the official story that can be filled by other explanations for important events,”

Couple on here could read this article! When the refs stop their bias against us and the Warriors get a title I predict those posters mindset will be much improved 🤣

To add to the public service debate:

The IMF publishes public expenditure as a percentage of GDP stats.

Under the Clarke era it was about 36%
Under the Key era it was about 36%
From 2000 until 2018 it was about 36%
Under the Ardern era it went up to 42%.

This ties in with the huge tax increase; huge increase in govt spending and the transformational approach Labour experimented with.

Some thinking peoples observations:

1 - A 6% increase in govt expenditure is a significant shift.
even worse @wizard of Tauranga, an increase from 36% to 42% is a 16% increase in spending…!

An August poll showed Auckland mayor Brown with a net satisfaction of plus 25%, with 42% rating his performance as very good or good. He was deeply unpopular 2 years ago after the floods but has risen every poll since. Talk is he’s going for re-election.

Lessons here nationally. Perform. Cut costs and focus on performing the basics well.

Something both parties should reflect on with the opportunity to clean up next election for National if they follow the Brown route - doing what’s sometimes unpopular but delivers results.

How does it compare to other countries over the same period. You would expect some jump as we were essentially propping up a lot of the private sector with government funding plus the tax take would have been down
2022 so 2 years post peak covid.

Probably a bit of a hangover but I think it’s generally accepted we’ve had tax increases but massive govt numbers increase.

I actually think the increase in govt was pretty well signalled with goals around child poverty, more state housing, campaigning on hospital system underfunding, etc.

Tax income was pretty consistent. But a bigger public service needs to be driven from a stronger private economy and there was 0 plan for that. You can’t just ramp up spending without additional plans for income.

So the so called free speech libertarians are actually authoritarian dictators enforcing censorship. Who knew that the fascist hard right could be that way.

Do you read what you post (or comprehend the issues) the change is clearly to ALLOW free speech. What does this censure?

Even the Greens in your article say it will ‘add fuel to the political fires’ with concerns for teachers; not that it will limit speech or censure anyone - the opposite.

The current Education act REQUIRES academic staff and students to question and test received wisdom, put forward new ideas, or state uncontroversial and explore unpopular opinions within the law.

It’s clearly not currently happening at universities with frequent examples of deplatforming, banning speeches, controlling what can be discussed, etc. Just this year a debate on free speech was cancelled at Victoria University because of a right wing speaker… the guy can write in the Nz Herald but uni student can’t handle him 🤯

When the lefties banned Don Brash from Massey in 2018 they won the battle but lost the war…

Do you read what you post. It's another bullshit move from the far right aimed at spreading disinformation and lies while dictating what universities can and can't do.

False equivalence but hey, that never stops you guys at all. My take? If it's a crime, if it's broken regulation, if they're being held to account, which it looks like they are, then great.

If it uncovers corruption of any kind I'm all for it.
Personally, I hate how ACT is propping up tobacco interests and the gun lobby. I hate that we’re getting rid of dog racing over animal welfare concerns while ignoring welfare concerns involving horse racing…. because NZF gets donations from the racing industry.

I hate that we export live animals while freezing works are closing down because certain parties receive funding from farming groups.

I hate how small town NZ is losing what’s left of it’s industry because we’ve moved too fast away from some power generation without having new in place pushing up power prices.

Tamaki using donated church money to fund his political ambitions.

I don’t like a charity (WT) receiving both government and private funding which then gives reduced interest loans to it’s execs and is the major funder of a political party (TPM).

While these may not reach the “legal” definition of “corruption”, all of these (and dozens more) stink to high heaven as far as I’m concerned.

Think with many countries, and lucratively involved with horse racing as opposed greyhound racing that would see horse racing tricky to outlaw. I support the greyhound racing ban, but as John Nick said, am concerned for the volume of dogs needing to be homed by time of the ban. I can see hurdles in horse racing coming to an end though

Should add a disclosure, my dad had an amateur jockey license when he was young and used to race in hurdles and steeplechase events until he saw too many things that concerned him about the welfare of horses.
