If the economy improved to the point that the austerity measures weren't in place and the government allowed spending again, would you be happy for him to join the rest of the MP's and Ministers claiming the allowance? Or would you be happy for there to be one rule for the very rich and one for the rest? What net worth value would you put on an PM taking the allowance or not?
In normal economic circumstances & where the Govt is not taking the knife to spending & if the allowance still existed then I have no trouble accepting that he has the right to take the allowance.

I hope however that this now having been highlighted that the Govt review the allowances that exist for MPs and ensure that they all pass the sniff test

Good that the spotlight has been put on this area out of all this and long overdue. They should look at retired parliamentarians too and the perks they enjoy for the rest of their days
‘At least 20 MPs across parties are claiming up to $45,000 to stay in their own Wellington homes’

The media going to name and shame them as well? Seems like Luxon is the only one with any integrity now.

The travel and accommodation entitlements were last reviewed by Labour in 2020 as required by a law past by National in 2013 IIRC.
MPs' pay was frozen in 2018, after the Government determined that the proposed salary increase to be unjustifiably high. The freeze allowed time for us to do work to ensure the settings for determining MPs' pay are appropriate. The Amendment Act to implement the new system for setting MPs' pay was passed in 2019

Did my own homework on my question. The review came after that you’re alluding to

Was that when they put a pay freeze on mps salaries?
Looks like it was done in September of 2020.... nice way for MP's to reimburse themselves for their COVID pay freeze....

This is a piece regarding the amendment. Would they reimburse themselves by stating multiple dwellings as residence or doctored travel expenses?

Reading it, it looks like the determination is made by the Remuneration Authority based on the act passed by National in 2013.

I wonder if anyone will look at Gerry Brownlee because he claimed the accommodation allowance last year for a rental property he owns and, as speaker of the house, is entitled to claim the same $53,000 as the PM. Or maybe he’s not rich enough ;)

Or if Shane jones is ticking up porn in his room

In all seriousness though, it’s a stark contrast to those of the highest earners that are saying they think and are comfortable with paying a higher threshold of tax or another form to pass some of their wealth onto to the economy, the ones David Seymour labeled grandstanders. Nothing you say is wrong, he Is entitled to it. Just like he was entitled to the clean car subsidy he picked up, or learning Te Reo on the taxpayer that he’s since scrapped but politics is a game of optics, which is why John key had the sense to donate his salary. I think there’s an expectancy or at least hopefulness that those that can afford it will use their own means in whatever way. That’s how the public and private medical system works though we know that’s not realistic or how any system works, whether there’s an entitlement or not. Most of us will generally take whatever we can get.

Are their homes their only properties?
Are they freehold or mortgaged?
Regardless, some type of means test should apply just like they're discussing for Super the majority of who have been work-life taxpayers. What's good for the goose...
Hell, Luxon and some others might have to pay rather than receive lol.

If you left that last sentence off your post it was informative and a reasonable question to ask.
But you just can't help it can you?🤐

Being that the remuneration authority is independent of government, is it your claim that mps made earnings back through a pay freeze or fact? Or is the remuneration authority apart of the wrought?

I wonder how much of this is just premier house being beneath Luxon’s standards, he must live in and own some lovely homes. This came from Usman Khawaja mentioning that luxon had said premier house was condemned, to which he later denied. I don’t know what Khawaja would stand to benefit by making the claim and if he doesn’t want to stay there-cool. Just don’t claim money when off all of us when accommodation is supplied but not up to your standard. Just my speculation

You are a tradesman. Do you charge consumables or tool money as part of the job?

Isn’t having to stay in Wellington, part of his job that he’s out of pocket if he doesn’t get reimbursed?

And like you choosing your preferred standard of tool, he should be able to select his preferred accomodation standard. The report confirms premier house is run down.

And to say he should take a free shithole is like saying you should use a cheap brand of plaster the customer may have on site rather than charge for a premium brand of plaster that is fit for purpose.

And the argument he owns the property - he’s forgoing rental income to stay there himself so he wasn’t actually gaining anything by covering his lost rent. Now he’s actually losing the lost rental income to simply do his job and is actually out of pocket.

A bit of small mindedness coming in here. I wish you guys were this forensic about the missing $15b of covid money and the missing $1.9b of mental health funding. You know $3,500 for every person in NZ rather than Luxons $0.01c per person… it’s a political hit job that actually exposes the utter hypocrisy and fiscal dopeyness of the left. 🤣
