The thread centers on New Zealand's upcoming election, primarily debating the economic management and policy differences between the center-left Labour government and center-right National/ACT opposition. Key criticisms target Labour's fiscal stewardship, citing ballooning government expenditure #7#272, housing unaffordability, and unfulfilled promises like KiwiBuild and dental care expansion #16#12. A user #7 highlighted Labour's annual 9% spending growth versus 1.5% under previous governments, arguing this fueled inflation. National's tax-cut policy faced scrutiny over funding gaps and legality, with user #215 questioning Luxon's reliance on "trust me" assurances.
Leadership competence emerged as a critical theme, particularly in later posts. Luxon drew heavy criticism after a contentious interview where he struggled to defend policy details #194#199#211, while Willis faced backlash for her economic credentials. Hipkins garnered fleeting praise for articulation but was ultimately seen as representing poor governmental outcomes #45#119. A trusted user #308 presented expert economic analysis contradicting Treasury optimism. Infrastructure issues—like Wellington's water crisis and the dental school staffing shortage—were cited as examples of systemic mismanagement #235#12. Notable policy debates included road-user charges for EVs #220, immigration impacts on rents #299, and coalition scenarios involving NZ First #182#258. Early fringe discussions on candidates' rugby allegiances gave way to substantive policy critiques, culminating in grim Treasury forecasts discussed in posts #271#304#308. User #168 also revealed concerns about Labour rushing regulatory changes to entrench policies pre-election.
Economic Policies, Housing Crisis, Leadership Competence
It’s like cleaning a clogged toilet. And so it begins.
$1.2b instead of $3b.Friends and Whānau Fund 2.0…… hopefully, there will be more accountability about where the money goes this time.
Regional infrastructure fund Controlled by Nationals Chris Bishop.$1.2b instead of $3b.
Still enough to buy 5% of voters?
Wink wink, nod nod.Regional infrastructure fund Controlled by Nationals Chris Bishop.
Yes, but at least there may be some checks and balances in place. And it's focused on infrastructure not just here's a pot of cash and do whatever you want with it like the last one was.Wink wink, nod nod.
Shane Jones will present all proposals with recommendations![]()
Where exactly are you reading about the checks and balances or that it's focussed on infrastructure?Yes, but at least there may be some checks and balances in place. And it's focused on infrastructure not just here's a pot of cash and do whatever you want with it like the last one was.
I really can’t see how the changes ACT talked about during the election are going to make things safer….. making things easier for so called law abiding people isn’t going to keep guns away from those who mean too use them for harm.Got to admit - repelling the gun reform is really great for the country. So great we're getting that positive change.
It has been announced that its a regional infrastructure fund and Chris Bishop is Minister for Infrastructure.Where exactly are you reading about the checks and balances or that it's focussed on infrastructure?
It's all barely been even been announced let alone implemented, yet you and Wiz are giving each other celebratory handjobs. Very cute.
That's something that we can agree on. Will be interesting to see what that actually entails.Got to admit - repelling the gun reform is really great for the country. So great we're getting that positive change.
Unfortunately..I see we are getting a three ringed circus with this latest bunch of idiots.
Had bloody good laugh reading that there will be two deputy prime ministers.
There is no such thing.
You either are 2ic or not.
And so it begins, the egos of the psychopath Peters and Seymour wagging the dog.
What a hoot.
I should be worrying more about the damage the three personalities will unleash, but life is too hard as it is, got to find mirth in it all or you will go round the bend.
Even Nationals most ardent fans must surely see that there was going to be a big problem with a three way with the manipulative Peters and the profoundly dense and narrow minded right wing Hitler youth type in Seymour.
God defend NZ and all that nonsense eh wot wot.
I got notice my rent going up.I’m surprised that National and NZ First have allowed the ACT policy on interest deductibility to be brought forward. While it won’t lead to rental decreases it may delay further rental increases.
I was totally being sarcastic - I think it's a really unnessecary and dumb change. It's more about pandering to a voter base the Act party were chasing...I really can’t see how the changes ACT talked about during the election are going to make things safer….. making things easier for so called law abiding people isn’t going to keep guns away from those who mean too use them for harm.
None of these parties give two fucks about the environment or climate change. They're a disaster in themselvesI’m surprised that both the Minister for the Environment and Minister of Climate Change are both outside of Parliament. I’d have thought both of those would have been too important.
