I think the way NRL is growing and spending on things like PNG and Vegas etc. Don't be surprised if they decide to help fund the next game and get it away from Big Ant

You would need to consider target audience numbers and whether or not the juice it worth the squeeze.
Think of it as an intersectional diagram of:
Those who play video games.
Those who enjoy NRL
Those who have money to pay for games.
You'd also have to consider any monetization models (in app purchases like loot crates) and how the above target audience may respond.
I don't have the numbers, but based off viewer numbers vs. the cost of video game development/licensing and distribution, I'm not expecting huge money out of a venture like this game.
Edit: this is also not considering the profit loss of not developing a game for a more widely popularized genre and setting instead.
That is the problem now, its a tough product to make profitable. My suggestion is the NRL to invest at a loss and put it down to 'marketing'. For example lots of people play fifa that aren't huge soccer fans

EA also make a billion plus dollars off the monetization model, as the chances of finding cash cows go up with the size of the target audience.
Thats exactly what US Army did with their free America's Army game in early 2000s. Served as a digital brochure and to help recruit kids from an early age to make them all just a little bit more trigger happy.

I wish there was a football manager type game for rugby league. Spent countless hours on FM2*...graphics doesnt need to be special but creating and developing your team and managing basically all aspects was highly addictive.

A tonne of screenshots and videos have been posted to Twitter overnight from someone who managed to get a copy early.
The gameplay itself is just about identical, to the point I thought it was a fake video of RLL4 modded at first.
Big Ant is in a bit of damage control, saying that ratings are not final and there are a lot of changes that will come with the release day patch.

A release day patch. That seems to happen quite often now. Release a game. Download it, and before you get to play it you need to download the first patch.
It is good that you can get updates to games after their release. Updated rosters, new features etc.
But more games are pushed out now when they are not ready and need a lot of patches. The Undisputed boxing game had a long period of people testing it, and still got released with a lot of issues. Prior to consoles being connected to the internet, you'd get a few buggy games or a few weird instances but it seemed like things were more ready for release.
A bit of a double-edged sword. A more competitive market with competition, a larger consumer base, and more platforms. Means they want to get the product out. But also the comfort that if there are issues, they can sort it out later.
I had not brought any games for a while. Got a few to go back to finish or play again. Bought the Tony Hawk 3 & 4 re-release and now my son knows about this rugby league game and is asking me about it daily.

Someone made a very good point about the fact it's 3 days from release and still no official gameplay videos, not being a good sign.

A bit steep charging $95 for a game with graphics from 10 years ago. Yes the developers are a small team with a small budget as compared to a 2k style game, but I think I’ll wait until it’s on sale in a few months time
I wish I had your patience. Not to mention they rushed out a rugby and AFL game in the last 2 years as well. Wonder if its a cash grab before they go broke....

All I wanted was a new game with updated rules, rosters, face scans, stadiums, and graphics, so literally the bare minimum, so I am not too cut about it.
Still, having the gameplay be indistinguishable is pretty wild. I had expected that, at the bare minimum, the new animations they already have made for Rugby 25 would have been added alongside the existing RLL4 animations.
My guess is that when TruBlu's licensing rights lapsed July last year, the NRL have gone to Big Ant (or vice versa) to just pump a game out ASAP.
Since Big Ant were just about to release their Tennis game and deep in the shit developing Rugby 25, they have just allocated a very small team to updating RLL4 to their current engine/graphics, and adding any rule changes. Add a few more people to implement their Ultimate Team gamemode, give the UI a new lick of paint, go out and get new face scans, and Bob's your uncle.
I really do believe that its just a case of getting their base back under them so we can get back to regular releases, and build from there. So yeah, this years game will be a cash grab, but beggars can't be choosers as they say, and I've been begging for years lol

Pre-ordered at Mightyape as that's my local. Turned up, and they tried to tell me my order was a pre-order for August 15.
Turns out they were never getting the game by today and i had to get a refund. Went to the Warehouse a bit further away and got my copy.
But now that it has downloaded, it says "cannot sign in" - I'm hoping it will just take until 11am when everyone else is able to download the digital version
