I used to holiday frequently in Australia and would discuss with friends or family over there about costs of specific things and would notice how they would deal with things. Sometimes with a bit more flexibility.

One time petrol prices were rising. They pointed out how petrol would be different prices due to the time of day or the side of the road. The side of the round with everyone heading in to work is more expensive. Then it swaps in the evening. Not sure if that is happening this time or has in recent years. But it is different to here which is just increase, increase, increase.

Not traffic related. But there were complaints about movie theatres struggling due to piracy. In NZ we raised the prices so less people pay more. In Australia they were providing cheaper tickets aiming to fill the theatre. This is more an example of a different view to fix an issue.

Politicians and Councillors talk about wanting to encourage public transport use. More people may use naturally due to petrol costs. But doing something like making it free would encourage more people to use it. From there it is up to the transport companies to make sure they can handle the amount of passengers, buses run on time. Basically ensure the experience may encourage people to stick to it.

As I said in another post if you live in a circle between GI Onehunga Mt Albert and the City it’s pretty good
I stayed in Green Lane for three days up to last Monday and took 22 public tspt bus train and ferry trips
I never waited for than five minutes at Green Lane station for a train north or south.
Bus s ran every 15 mins east west on Green lane Rd.
I used bus train airport to Green Lane easy
Caught Waiheke ferries - there was a glitch there had to wait 15 mins to get to surfdale by bus
So for that part of AKL PTis very good

Tauranga tried free buses for under 18’s over COVID and canned it soon after over violence, antisocial behaviour and in the end the bus drivers refusing to stop at some stops and it got canned.

Have to say I'm a big fan of public transport and around the world it seems to work OK in many countries.

Here, not so much and probably because again, we are a small population in a large area with very little adequate PT between cities/towns that suits our "I want to go anywhere I like right now"

PT is not just about getting from the Burbs into the City

Costs are up but I don’t think we’re going to have chronic shortages that affect industry.

Great management by the govt and seems the panic and govt blaming was just the usual crisis over everything mob.

Under the previous contract for the ferries that this government cancelled, costing hundreds of millions to New Zealand taxpayers, one ferry would have been here by now, and the other would be here later this year.

Instead:

Connemara cancellations will impact freight companies -Transport NZ

BlueBridge has extended cancellations with the ferry no longer expected to resume services until at least Tuesday evening.
