The comment that two other players were considering a release was made around the time the AFB news came out.

Wasn't Curran already gone by then?
As I recall comments that we could have held onto him if we knew another player was going to leave.

Volkman is another one that would be a bit easier to take seeing as he was released. His request to be released is understandable seeing as we had signed CHT and he was likely going to find it tough to make first grade. Mind you it looks like he needs to return for his surgery and rehab. He will obviously return as it is paid for. If he was homesick coming back would be a bit of a chore especially the rehab.

Barnett made comments about being keen to move to NZ when he first signed. There may be other things going on in his life.

Any of the Australian guys if they did want to return home it can't be football related. Last year was one of the best ever, the crowd support meant you were playing in front of full houses, you are likely to learn from.

The weather is usually something that is brought up. I've seen some comments with players saying their team mates joking that it isn't normally like this.

We are pretty far removed from the AFB article saying two others were considering asking to leave. We are deep into the pre-season and close to the season starting. I'd say it is more likely something not too worry about or they may ask part way through the season and the club can either recruit for next year or allow it once they sort out a replacement.

I know November 30 is when you are allowed to make offers but it does seem like people make too much of that date. We have had a few early announcements but most signings are still done during the season as teams review how they are going.
Couple of things. If it’s the family coming over it can take a long time to settle. Wife at home w kids isolated from her parents and support network. Kids get homesick and the kiwis give them sh&t for their eccents.

Other single dudes probably have it a bit easier as they’re not getting nagged by the wife and can be free. But also can get homesick if they don’t have the support network. Wade Egan, Jacko Ford definitely keen to stay on in Auckland which is awesome.

Brent Webb, wade mckinnon and Blake Asyshford all stayed in NZ after playing days were over. Maybe married kiwis….it’s hard to make the shift w family unless the support network is already in Auckland. Think about the players who have had their best seasons coming home - SJ and CNK, about to be joined by RTS. Happy wife, happy life….

We should be recruiting ex-warriors who are even slightly homesick

Is it really any different to us letting Volkman go with a payout?
It's more about the cap bro. When you look at the Broncos roster, they lost Farnsworth and Flegler, which you'd think would mean they'd be a bit weaker this year. Arthurs is not a bad replacement for Farnsworth, but they don't have a replacement for Flegler. Their prop stocks are low. With no quality props on the market, this is pretty convenient for them. It's like a hidden hand is somewhere moving the pawns into place, and we the fans are scratching our heads wondering what's going on.

Taumalolo and Townsend no longer Cowboys captains. Replaced by Dearden and Cotter.
Wonder if it adds any weight to Payten not having JT in his plans
I'm still keen on getting a subsidised Taumalolo here for a couple of years
Agreed, BHU, Taumalolo would be a good to very good tandem. Taumalolo is not as good as AFB but used in the right way by a very savvy coach could be a very good and damaging prospect.

If we also went real hard for Ben Te Kura I would be real happy. A future star, different body shape and a kiwi (realistically a mozzie). That would make us a very good pack, but if we missed out at least we would have put more pressure on the Broncos salary cap.

They signed Fletcher Baker from the roosters. Not as good as Flagler yet. But he’s pretty decent.

This person knew who the cowboys captains were going to be from a mate at the club, also reckons Taumalolo’s knee is shot. Wonder if they will try and medically retire him?

That certainly was way ahead of the official captaincy announcement. Regardless, no way we should be chasing Taumalolo, he’s clearly on the downhill slope after an incredible career. Real pity that he couldn’t have stayed near peak level for a few more years. One of the all time great NRL forwards.

I think Taumalolo is a bit of a pipe dream. He’s earning a $1m a year no matter what, so why would he move to NZ. It’s not like he would gain anything out of it. He doesn’t even play for NZ anymore and has lived in Aus more than he has NZ
