Gutted for RV and hope he gets some kind of pay from somewhere….
They must not have known how bad it was, otherwise there is no way you would ask for a release when you still had 2 years left.
Since we are not paying freight you’d have to assume that he got a really good offer from St George. Asked for a release and was granted. Can’t see how there would be any come back on us.

Far out what an absolute clusterf*ck of a situation. Poor Ronnie, it looks like he may have been given some very poor advice on what to do by his management, unless they didn't actually know he needed surgery or was injured...

I was commenting on the situation earlier on in the week about how the whole thing came about being strange circumstances. If we've released him I can't see how we would have to pay. Even if we knew (which I hope we didn't), RV asked for a release and we obliged.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out - no contract for this year and no chance to prove himself for next year, do we offer him a minimum contract for the next year to help him out? I know it's a business etc but I think the Warriors have shown their a considerate club, might be beneficial for the club to be seen as a place who gives a shit about you as opposed to strictly being money related

He was still training. He was doing the pre-season with us, and then doing it at the Dragons. Pretty clear that he thought it was just a niggle and something that would come right, but after having a scan, its shown structural damage.

There is no way for us to have known, the whole point of a scan is to see what the human eye can't. If he was still fulfilling training activities then there would have been no reason for us to have done any testing unless RV himself said it was bad.

I don't think this is anyone's fault, its just some bad bloody luck.

You could be 100% right.
But there is someone to put the blame on and that is his management.
Do not get a formal release before signing your new contract, medical and all.

this isa huge no from me. In what world would we have to honor the previous deal? he was training with the dragons? whose to know he didnt suffer something in their training or maybe he did it during the Christmas break?

its a terrible thing to happen to the young bloke but shame on both the dragons and his management team to have him training without having a contract lodged with the nrl
 
This should highlight to the Players association that players need more protection if RV Is ultimately unemployed.
Needs to be put in place that medicals and every aspect of the contract is covered once there is a signature on the contract.
If the contract says subject to medicals and you fall over in the shower and do your knee that means your contract is void.
Surely it doesn’t work like that now.

If we have released him by mutual decision. Ie he asked and we said ok. Then there would be a process to go through, release documents to sign, communication of that to the NRL etc etc. As long as the club has done that, I agree with you. No way should we be giving up cap space or a roster spot. Be interesting to see what the RLPA and the NRL have to say about it. From what I read it sounds like he has a signed contract with the Dragons but it hasn't been lodged with the NRL yet. Is that the clubs responsibility to do? Assuming the contract has been signed, I don't think the Dragons can get out of it unless there is some medical clause in there, but I would think that's up to the club and their medical team to do the due diligence.

The more I think about it, how dumb from the dragons getting him into contact training, prior to doing a medical and before even lodging a contract. Amateur hour.

well this is the issue i see. Dragons should of done a medical in and around when he signed his contract and def should of done medicals way before any sort of training had commenced

is a medical clause normal in a young fella who as far as im aware doesnt have a history of major injuries..... plus its only a one year contract from memory
