Anyone seen the new instalment of tadpole? Singer Lauren Marshall is stunning. Always liked that song blind

They were a bit of a guilty pleasure for me in the early 00s, saw them at one of the Massey Uni orientation gigs in that era which were always a bit of messy fun hah!

HLAH/Shihad, Living End, Goodshirt/Steriogram were a few other fun ones I have scattered memories about 🍻😅 oh to be young and unjaded again hah!

I didn't feel as much love towards Blindspott (or Linkin Park as it happens, feels like both came outta nowhere around the same time with the same kinda vibe) - partly due to immediately becoming annoyingly overplayed on the radio and music video shows.

I did go to the Blindspott comeback tour a few years back though, and enjoyed myself immensely so there's that 😅

My personal favourite Kiwi bands that I discovered by way of stumbling upon them playing live before ever hearing a song of theirs (and ended up seeing multiple times in ensuing years), are Cairo Knife Fight and Decortica.

The original CKF with Aaron Tokona was almost hypnotising, the way they'd slowly layer up all the guitar/drum/bass synth parts via loop FX between the two of them, sometimes bluesy, sometimes fully rocking out was very much my jam.
It was also very cool to see Aaron open as a solo act for the new version of CKF with former Black Eyed Peas guitarist (who is more an in-your-face Terminator/machine style of guitar player hah!), he played his own desert-dream versions of Calling On (Weta), There There (Radiohead) and Wicked Game (Chris Isaak), those three songs went for about half an hour!

Decortica I liken to a dirty dark version of Muse if they didn't go down the pop-rock route, unfortunately they split up ages ago, but they made three albums which I often have in my rotation, and the lead singer has had a few other projects (Domes, Magnalith) which are a bit more experimental but still quite cool.

One of the original Pips (Gladys Knight’s back up singers) William Guest, died this day in 2015. "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "I Heard it Through the Grapevine” are two of my all time favourite songs.

We went and heard Gladys a few years ago when she spoke of the change in lyrics for “Midnight train to Georgia”. It was originally written as a country song by Jim Weatherly called “Midnight bus to Houston”and the first person to record a soul version of it was Whitney’s mother Cissy Houston but she changed the words to “Midnight train to Houston” because, in Cissy’s words, “her people didn’t travel long distances by bus”.

Because Gladys was from Georgia, she asked for Weatherley’s permission to change it to there instead of Houston…. and that led to the greatest ever version of the song.
