There would almost be something poetic in having Ivan's understudy come here and finish the job he started years ago.
Poetic you say? A Peta Haiku

In the start
John Hart
was good for you
passing his skills
learning the drills
and giving all he knew
now it’s your time
to come back in your prime
to the same role
all with the goal
to make us the powerhouse we deserve to be
and your son is here

Ode to Ivan

Can't believe there's discussion of dumping Webby even if it is for Ivan. Given the trajectory he is on as a coach, it would go down as possibly our worst coaching blunder. Maybe second only to our initial decision to let Ivan go in 2011 for Bluey when Ivan by all accounts wanted to stay. I largely blame Bluey for the subsequent lost decade of failure that followed.

If I read it right the question was meant to be an off season hypothetical to get people engaging, rather than a serious question.

I'm pretty sure nearly every team in the NRL would take Webby, and their fans would rejoice at getting him. We are absolutely blessed to have him, the only way Ivan is coming back here while Webby is here is if it's as a GM.
Interesting to ponder.

I think only Cleary, Bellamy (definitely) and perhaps Madge, Ciraldo and Sticky as probables given the benfit of continuity.

I think every other team would drop their coach for Webster in a hypothetical where he was available.

Given that, I would rank Webster the third best coach in the NRL after Cleary and Bellamy.

Thoughts?

It's hard to compare a guy with less than 80 games in charge to guys with 300+ games like Stuart & Robinson but since Webster became our coach both Stuart & Robinson have more regular season wins than him. Robinson has more post season wins too.
Why would you take Webster before Maguire?

Honest question, would you dump webby for him if he wanted to come back?
Probably. If you could guarantee Cleary would be coaching for at least 3 seasons then 100%.
What sounds better, Ivan Cleary (still just 54 years old) assisted by David Tangata-Toa or Andrew Webster assisted by Stacey Jones?
It's a hypothetical but I'll make it clear anyway that I'm in no way advocating to axe Webster. He's still evolving as a coach & hasn't reached his ceiling but on how many occassions have we seen wins on the back of his astute tactical decisions? In defeats how often do we bemoan bench rotations?
What risks, if any, has he taken with his coaching that has paid off?

Yes, we've seen career best seasons out of CNK & Clarke, but both were incumbent Kiwis when they arrived, as was DWZ when Webster first appeared.
Vaimauga & Halasima have grown immensely under him but based off of the potential they showed in juniors/reserves is it in any way unexpected?
If Tohu hadn't retired would both Clarke & Vaimauga been regulars in the 17 prior to Walker's departure/Barnett's injury? Based off of every other conservative selection, I guess not from looking back at the line up in Vegas to begin 2025

Cleary to coach NZ with Jett declaring to play for NZ after Hughes hangs them up.
The funny thing about this is that it could happen and it feels organic too.
Ivan could coach the team for years and Jett could be the young half we are looking to develop with the Kiwis and play along side Dylan Brown for years too.
Back in clubland, my hot take is, if Jett is serious about carving his own path and not being cast in Nathan’s shadow, he should never play for Penrith again as he will always be compared to big brother, either what he achieved or what Nathan would have done.

Not much said by these two about disrespecting haka’s like Kidwell taught Mason. Good to see it being recognised what the Webster influence is having on players, they didn’t even mention Dylan Walker among those that have come here and either playing their best or rejuvenating their careers

I don’t think Ivan would leave Penrith particularly with Nathan still being there. It’s more likely Jett leaves the Warriors so Nathan can end his career playing alongside him. It’s more likely Webby will take over at Penrith when Ivan retires & Slade Griffin will take over at the Warriors seeing that he’s a bit younger than Tangatatoa

Ivan and Nathan have had lifetime deals on the table for a couple of years now and haven’t signed them at Penrith, perhaps they both holding out to gain ownership of the club? Haven’t seen much to suggest Webster is anything but committed to the Warriors so I’m not sure I’m seeing what you’re seeing unless you’ve got an inside scoop here?
