Melbourne Storm have confirmed the signing of young New Zealand Warriors backrower Eliesa Katoa on a two-year contract.

The 22-year-old was a breakout star in 2020, where he made his name as an edge forward who had the innate ability to find his way over the stripe. However, since his impressive rookie season, Katoa has struggled to establish himself at the Warriors and will be released at season's end to take up a deal with the Storm.

Rumours of Katoa’s unhappiness at the Kiwi side have been swirling for some time, so his departure comes as no real surprise. Yet it is a strange move in many cases considering the homegrown junior was once viewed as the future of the club.

Signed until the end of 2024, Katoa sought a release from the Warriors after being unable to break into the team.

Katoa asked for his release because we couldn't develop him with the muppets we had and had fallen down the pecking order.

So he wanted to go and we probably saw an opportunity to unload a contract that wasn't good value to us because of the aforementioned muppets.
