St George Illawarra star and NSW under-19s forward Jacob Halangahu has been ruled out of the NSW Cup grand final after being rushed to hospital for emergency surgery.
Halangahu, an outstanding prospect who played five NRL games this year, trained with the team as normal on Thursday evening.
After returning home, Halangahu complained of severe stomach pain and was rushed to hospital where surgeons removed his appendix.
The Dragons’ NSW Cup side produced a 24-10 upset over minor premiers the Warriors last weekend to book themselves a place in next Sunday’s grand final at CommBank Stadium, where they will meet the winner of Saturday’s clash between New Zealand and Parramatta at Jubilee Oval.
But St George Illawarra will have to do it without Halangahu, who has had a rapid ascent through the Red-V grades.
The former Patrician Brothers Blacktown schoolboys star made both his NSW Cup and NRL debuts this year, and will join the Dragons’ top-30 squad next season, having signed a two-year contract extension.
The Dragons consider the 183cm, 109kg edge forward one of their key long-term talents.
Halangahu was the Dragons’ SG Ball player of the year when he led them to last season’s premiership, before representing NSW under-19s in their State of Origin win over Queensland

Ali back would be huge. Definitely qualifies with this random injury exemption.

Need Boyd in for Cleary too. I think we got found out a lot last week with our last tackle options.

No chance of TMM also I guess? Hasn’t met the minimum games and no injuries this year that I can think of

No Tafua or Aulua on the bench, both injured? Getting Lussick off the bench would be ideal to give Healey a spell

Think Healey will make a big difference to this side which seems to play a very mobile game
