Finally Ford starts.

Been saying that since Barney went down. We need a leg speed high energy starting prop to get the best out of the Fish.

Bugger bench calls. Get your priorities straight, bench impact is icing, starting platforms are the cake.

Also it just may be that impact is generated through our bench back rowers rather than our prop rotation....

Welcome back Berry, good luck with the body mate.

Looks like we are gonna hunt down Boyds long kicks and pin the Tigers. Good strategy, yes I know that is not new, but the return of Berry and starting Ford gives that strategy real emphasis, which is important with Boyds style.

Halfback Tanah Boyd will make his club debut, Taine Tuaupiki starts at fullback and winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak returns from injury for the One New Zealand Warriors’ sold-out round 19 NRL clash against the Wests Tigers at Go Media Stadium on Sunday (4.00pm kick-off).

At the same time, Queensland second rower Kurt Capewell has been named on the extended bench and could be a late inclusion depending on how he comes through tomorrow night’s State of Origin series decider in Sydney.

With halfback Luke Metcalf’s season ended by an ACL injury in the loss to the Broncos, One New Zealand Warriors head coach Andrew Webster has called up the seasoned Boyd who has been outstanding for the club’s table-topping New South Wales Cup side.

The 24-year-old, who will become Warrior #293, arrived this season after 69 NRL games for Gold Coast. Noted for his general kicking game, he’s also a top-flight goal-kicker with an 80 per cent success rate at first-grade level.

In 13 outings for the Warriors’ NSW Cup side this year – all wins – he has scored 137 points with an 80.49 per cent goal-kicking strike rate while he has 16 try assists, an average 300 kicking metres a game, nine tackle breaks and an average 68 running metres a game.

With first-choice fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad sidelined with a knee injury, Tuaupiki returns for his 21st career appearance and his 10th this season; he started at fullback in the round seven win over the Broncos while he was used on the wing in his other eight outings.

Watene-Zelezniak is back from an ankle injury suffered in the round 16 loss to Penrith, his sixth match back following a delayed start to the campaign from wrist surgery.

Apart from the backline changes, Webster has named Jackson Ford to start in the front row with Marata Niukore – used as a starting prop in four of the last five games – listed in the second row with Leka Halasima.

As it stands now, the interchange comprises utility Te Maire Martin and three of the club’s young brigade in Jacob Laban, Demitric Vaimauga and Tanner Stowers-Smith.

The Warriors come into the match off their third and final bye after suffering back-to-back losses for the first time this season against the Panthers and the Broncos.

They remain in fourth place on 26 points with a 10-5 record, four points ahead of fifth-placed Brisbane and five ahead of sixth-placed Penrith.

The Tigers will be buoyant after snapping a six-match losing streak with a 30-28 win over the Roosters on Sunday which moved them to 14th on the ladder, four points off eighth spot.

When the two teams met at Campbelltown Sports Stadium in round four, the Warriors grabbed a dramatic 26-24 win, their ninth victory in their last 10 games against the Tigers.

The NRL match is the main event of an historic doubleheader at home with the NRLW side facing Parramatta in the curtain raiser kicking off at 1.50pm.

It’s the first time the club’s NRL and NRLW sides have shared the same game day at Go Media Stadium and only the second time the Warriors have had an NRLW home game (the first being a stand-alone against the Dragons in 2019).

I think this team list shows how strong the the club is becoming.

We have lost our best forward, best back/playmaker, and our defensive rock at the back, and potentially our other Origin forward and we have still scraped together a decent enough side. Add in losing Tohu Harris with no chance of replacement too.

Depth, hardened youngsters who have been drip-fed in, and talent coming through at all ages Good systems for replacements to step in to that are consistent through grades. There have been a lot of false dawns, but it feels like the foundations are stronger this time. Lots of variables to come though.

That said, any more injuries will really hurt. I hope Tanah can step up and seize his chance. He looks like he should fit okay, though all of our play will need to come from structure, which might make us look a bit impotent at times.

I view this team as a high ceiling and low floor team. Results will be inconsistent. Somedays we will click other days we won't. Our best prognosis is if we can get some momentum and self belief. Ford either starting or off the bench is problematic with his complete and total lack of discipline. I probably would have had Bunty in for TSS and started Bunty with Ford on the bench.

I was really expecting TMM to get the nod at 7 so I need this decision to sink in for a while but will fully back and support Tannah. To give him a compliment he creates great shape in the NSW cup team. If he can create good shape in the First grade team then we could see some special unlocking of this teams potential more than Metcalf did. Metcalf generated offence himself. Ie he scored the tries. Boyd if he can play well,, which is a big if, as he panicked for the Titans last year and did not play with composure, will create a higher octane offence across the park. However as I mentioned there is also a low floor to this team. Will Boyd play well or will his insecurities and lack of runs on the board as a player at top level play on his mind, Will Taine pick up from where he left off. Will Dallin settle down and play well defensively and offensively. This team could swing in any direction. But surely with home town support roaring them on at Mt Smart we can be too much for Le Tiger. As for future weeks. Watch this space.

A criticism of Metcalf is he can play a bit sideways sometimes but I think if Boyd can play direct and go deep into the line, the team could benefit. I liked his honesty on SJ’s league lounge when SJ asked him how to stop a full speed Latrell Mitchell, he said try your best or words to that effect and finally said be a speed bump. Think he’s going to get a lot of traffic his way
