Sources close to the Tauranga bid claim the organisation went cold on the Smith opportunity when they learned of his excessive demands. The financially savvy leadership team had concerns about over-committing to any one player.

The organisation took comfort that unfashionable teams have to offer bloated retirement packages to attract big name players and the organisation is reportedly comfortable in the knowledge that well run squads can attract the right player at ‘unders’ because players want to be part of something special. ‘You don’t see the Panther paying overs’ the unnamed source is quoted.

Smiths current player agent Isaac Moses, is reportedly delighted at the salary he’s been able to extract for his player. ‘Much more than the elite teams like the Storm have ever been prepared to pay.’ He says.
