Yes definitely, I’d argue he’s the best winger of the entire period (based entirely on what I’ve heard about him & seen in limited highlights)Eric Grothe Snr wing
Geoff toovey/ cliffy lyons could be an option for the halves.Bob Lindner second row, Craig Young at prop. Steve Mortimer perhaps at halfback
He had a huge Wally Lewis like reputation and he was scary. we actually had to tackle him in test matches. And to the Kiwis credit we did just that with our boys aiming up against legends of the game all commanded and directed, as I posted earlier, by the rangitira toa himself Leiws. Who had broken his arm at some point and for years played with his arm in a cast thar made him look even more rugged.Yes definitely, I’d argue he’s the best winger of the entire period (based entirely on what I’ve heard about him & seen in limited highlights)

Interesting one the wing position. If we’re just talking specialist wingers then I think my top 5 would be in no particular orderHe had a huge Wally Lewis like reputation and he was scary. we actually had to tackle him in test matches. Finally I will say that i have said three times before on the all blacks rugby forum but never before on this forum. New Zealanders in the 1980s to say 2000 but it has gone out of fashion now would bestow the word Great upon a rival players. in union it was the Great David Campese, the Greate Serge Blanco, the Great Phillipe sella and I remember as a youth a hush falling when you said these names, and in league it was the Great Wally Lewis. Eric Grothe was the not the Great Eric Grothe he was a level below that and partly because wing is a bit of powder puff position compared to the hard men who play the other positions. But in terms of the greatest wingers since 1980 my top 5 are
1) Offiah
2) Eric Grothe Senior
3) Ettinghausen
4) the Fox
5) El Masri - in due to kicking.
The Greatest ever kiwi wings since 1980 (remember I have only seen certain periods)
1) RTS
2) Blackmore
3) Jason Nightengale
4) Mulitalo
5) DWZ
Snap!George Burgess, Jim Dymock, Darren Smith & Jason Smith wouldn't have looked out of place on anyone's bench
Geez they wouldn’t get within a million miles of a best of the rest team, there’s a lot of very good props ahead of themFrom the 2024 Kiwis
Leo thompson and Whyte held their own on the international stage.
I always liked Craig SalvatoriGeez they wouldn’t get within a million miles of a best of the rest team, there’s a lot of very good props ahead of them
I recall him being the form player of the comp in the earlier rounds of 1992, went on to play for the Kangaroos against the Kiwis & they smashed usI always liked Craig Salvatori
There's always a very heavy focus on the NRL/NSWRL. Most, if not all of the English players taken had stints in AustraliaHad a passing interest in the game and looked at some selections. Surprised noone got Keiron Cunningham.
