Gameday Witzer Pre-Season challenge Dolphins vs Warriors

Trai still has the ball in two hands, if DWZ indicates at all he's going to slide Fuller puts Herbie through untouched. Ali can't release from Fuller until he's passed it which he won't do until Ali commits, and those other inside defenders are no chance.

And of course these are all split second decisions, he does what he's coached to do.

NRL fullbacks eat up 3 v 2s for breakfast, especially on their left edge.
I agree in principle with the gist, but image 2 show Fuller with the ball and Ali defending with a clean line, so he has to pass or run.

Image 3 shows Fuller has released the ball and DWZ still setting his position on Herbie.

Blaming Dallin for Boyd’s defensive decision. The moment Boyd rushed out, Ali & Dallin needed to. It’s also, clearly, our defensive policy of jamming & forcing the statistically more difficult pass.
We need to change our defensive structure then. This is the nrl, any fullback/half should be able to throw a cut out pass(unless your Charnze). And most the time that’s all it takes to catch us out

Not a single person has suggested that DWZ needed to stay out wide so unsure why posters are bringing it up.

Im not blaming Dal at all for what happens on the inside, Im blaming him for his positioning and his actions once the defense has already shown him he's facing a 2 on 1.
Its more that a few are implying he made a wrong defensive read when he hasnt.

Too your point of what he does after he's caught in a 2 on 1, its really hard to go from a jamming in at full tilt motion, to stop on a dime, then turn out to recover. Remember these attacking players are running onto the ball at SPEED, its not the still shots or slow mo replays u see on TV.

Your next point will probably be "well X and Y player from this team can do it". Id argue that their middles have worked harder filling the spaces which means their edges dont have to jam as much and that winger is already on the slide....

And that really is the key when overlaps are created and the edges are caught for numbers.....its the middles working hard and filling space....even after the ball has shifted.....as i mentioned before in that try, Laban stopped and planted, which had the effect of Boyd not being able to slide out and caused the chain reaction....cause if your my inside man and stop moving and i carry on sliding....that space between us has just become a yawning chasm in an instant.

Id wager it'll be that 3/4 man defensive combination they'll work on more at training this week.

It’s always interesting how people see things differently. For the dolphins try in question I saw Boyd do the right thing. He saw we were short and rushed up to pressure the pass, which in my mind means his 2 outside players should’ve also followed. Both Ali and DWZ were slow on the rush which allowed the Dolphins time to make the right pass. If they had followed Boyd in harder it creates more pressure on making a good pass.

3 try assists in a season says otherwise. Everyone gos on about his 23 season, all he had to do was catch and pass, sj done most the work

We're talking about succesful 3 v 2 execution, you can successfully execute a 3 v 2 without even registering a try assist.

Only way you can measure it statistically is if you knew how many 3 v 2 looks he had and how many they converted regardless of whether its through the hands (generally no TA for FB) or a cut out. Even CCES wouldn't be able to find those stats.

He also only sweeps one side on good ball attack in our system and we often run double lead shapes which result in 2 v 1s if executed well, so he's probably not drowning in 3 v 2 opportunities. Though again had to quantify.

No ones arguing hes a dynamic ball player or super creative or anything, but he can put the ball through the hands.

Serious question

How come we never have this problem on RTS’s left side???
Well just to be clear that try scored on the weekend wasnt a "Dal problem".

But one factor is attacking teams will set up for shape whatever side their dominant half favours. For most (not all) generally they favour their stronger right to left pass so the majority of shape will be set up to attack the defensive teams right edge (SJ was the anamoly who had a strong left to right pass so most of his attacking 2nd man plays were set up that side, hence why often that winger was normally the higher try scorer - Dal in 23 etc)

Looking at the 4 top try scoring wingers this year 3 of them - the Fox, Xavier Coates, and Daniel Tupou are all left wingers (Nawaqanitacantspellit the exception so the Roosters quite comfortable favouring both sides) but generally Rog wont get as much shape thrown his way.

In saying that tho that edge also jams in. Have seen Rog get beaten or not quite getting his timing right but nowhere near some of the horrendous misreading of cues we saw from Dal last year. Then again i think his edge was a lot more settled with him and Pompey. I think Dal really missed Berry last season.

Damned if does. Damned if he doesn't. He would get slayed for not helping if he (which is right)marked his man. It's just a negative by product of the defensive breakdown further in.

Nail him for his failures but he would need faster processing and movement to be able to hit those tackles and stop the bloke. This is good dialogue about what and who needs to improve.
