Gameday Witzer Pre-Season challenge Dolphins vs Warriors

I think there are some things to worrie about and again its the right edge defense, DWZ And Ali Leiataua could leak a ton of points each week.

I think we lacked any intensity in that first half, it wasn't until the kids came on that we sparked.

I really dont give a shit about the result tonight, but the imagine what DCE, can do down our right edge is scary.

Ali Leiataua was fucken Awful on D tonight!
I think you're missing Boyd in that list. He caused at least two of those tries down that edge; one where he rushes out of the line causing the overlap and the other where he stumbles over CNK trying to get up for marker. Although our ruck control was pretty bad throughout that game.

Not really worried with the end result. The first graders were really good though! Kind of reminded me of the 2023 team how they ran shape especially the variety of passing confused the hell out of the Dolphins!

Morgan Gannon is looking really handy! Mid season (baring injury) he could be a difference for the season. Luke Hansen I like him! He really works well with Tanah Boyd.

I’m hoping we surprise the competition again this year! The roller coaster for 2026 begins now!
Can't wait! 😂

TSS was somewhat maligned as not big enough to bend the line etc but he is growing into himself and has shown definite growth and progress. I'm on the TSS train.
given how quick the game is now, I just don't think we need to obsess with not having any 6 foot 7 120kg monsters in our pack. AFB and Haas are really the exception due to their ability to play big minutes and footwork. All the other top middles in the game are all roughly 6'1 and 107ish kgs like Fish or Leota. TSS is certainly in that mould.

Outside backs is still a massive problem. Seems every other club has 18 year old wingers and centres who are absolute guns. Mellars is know where near first grade yet and dallin is 32.
I’d be rolling with Rts, Akp, Kali, Pasikala, Norris
Just on Cobbo's try in the first half.....

The play that got that try had zero to do with Dallin. We were short in numbers when they went to our right.

To be exact. They stacked 8 on that side and we had six. There is not a hope in the world that Dallin, Coates, To'o, Lomax, Spider man, Samson, The Terminator or Bruce Lee could have shut that down.

Then on the second one we let in on Dallin and Ali's side. Check the numbers and be dazzled.

When Dallin marks his guy, Ali gets up and joins him in the short side. That makes TWO.

Dolphins dummy half (1) shows and goes and strolls past Ali who looks useless and lazy and not applying any effort because between Dallin and Ali, they have three Dolphins to mark as well as dummy half. So they win again based on 4 attackers v 2 defenders.

Dallin is 32 and has worn the blame for somebody going missing in the line forcing him to mark multiple attackers.

Being unable to control ruck speed in our 20metre zone means numbers can stack against us faster than we can apparently count,. communicate and adjust. This gets Dallin a big fat "He's so useless" from the forum experts.

Ye that one wasn’t on Dallin, he came up and in and jammed the centre, simply just short on numbers. But 9 times out of 10 it is him jamming on absolutely no one, that’s why he cops so much flack. He doesn’t jam the centre and shut down the play, he’s rushing at the fresh air between centre and winger.

Most nrl teams do the up and in defensive structure we’re just not very good at it, lack of pace is probably a factor as well.

I may be outsmarting nrl defensive coaches here, but my team does it and we’re a defensive rock lol.
It’s called up and out(jockey defence) you sprint up, take the space and jockey outwards and trust you’re inside man to defend, works real good when your on your line and the attacking team has an overlap.

With jamming defence, one rainbow pass and you’re over

Plenty to like, plenty to ponder...

Ali will get first crack at right-centre but some of that D, not even Flegg worthy..

Hard not to be absolutely delighted with the progress in our young core forwards. JFH to come back in and hopefully Barnett back to his best quickly. Not too worried if Ford is out, he has a motor but not much more, I think we cover him with ease.

Classic Boyd performance, it was good and I don't think we can ask for more than that from him.

TT for 18 for me. Loved his entry into the game, CNK owns the 1 jersey and when he is injury free like he is at the moment, he does a good job. Get TT on 20 to go for the spark.

I'm thinking we will run with:

1. CNK
2. DWZ
3. Ali
4. Pompey
5. RTS (I can see RTS going to CTR for Ali to accommodate AKP as well but maybe not Rnd 1).
6. CHT
7. Boyd
8. JFH
9. Egan
10. Barnett
11. Laban
12. Capewell
13. Clark

14. Healey
15. Demetric
16. TSS
17. Halasima
18. EIT / Niukore
19. TT

yes, he's put the work in and is a legit 1st grader now and I didn't see him as that last year....but... didn't it seem like Phins were targeting him last night? He stood up pretty well, good technique and energy and I think he'll be strong off the bench against tiring 1st stringers or their bench forwards but when we have a history of being rolled by big, strong fast packs he's a support act not a lead. Yet at least.

Without Barney, Fish, Demi or Niukore I thought Clarke, TSS & Ford did really well and gave Boyd the space to look the best I have seen him. When those 3 weren't all on we didn't seem to have the ability to stop their roll on. Moreso when Boyd was subbed out too. Webby was more concerned about giving the roster a run than getting the result, which is what trials are about, but the run on team did better than I was expecting and a far more attacking brand than we've seen. Mellars needs to be polished in NSW not 1st grade tho. DWZ looked good IMO, just needs to stand another couple of paces wider on D ;)

I think Ali just further underscored what a lot of us have been saying (well I have gotten carried away on this topic in the past tbf) but he is why he never gets out of NSW cup - not Andrew Webster.

He cannot be selected in that form. So no need to worry, he won't make the team anyway. I certainly won't bash him anymore, he has a problem, a psychological hurdle to overcome, hey look at it this way, most of us would arm grab in that competition, I mean sure maybe make the first hit full of adrenaline with the Whanau watching and TV camera's - but I recon after the buzz wore off I would either be getting carted off or bloody trying not to kill myself in the next four tackles - and I used to play center...

If it were me coaching the bloke, I know one old trick that has worked since the first footy was kicked....tackle around the waist or legs side on, at least make tackle, even if you get dragged over the line - Taine Tuapiki and guys like him have to make a career out of side on legs tackles. Do that and eventually you stop being scared to go higher.

He might get a one game reprieve to see if he improves with our best defensive line up on his inside. But I think Ali is going to learn a hard lesson this season.

In terms of the lack of intensity till the young guns came on....it is clear Webster has told the old boys to just get some contact in and try combos and ignore the scoreboard, you can see after two games that they have been told to hold back and save the body for round one.
The boost we get from the bench is a thing in Webster ball, we get through our seasons well using youthful energy, everything is working as it should be imo.

I think TSS and Gannon were probably the biggest winners in that trial. TSS continues to improve and he’s using those little tricks for a couple extra yards or a quick play the ball very well.

Gannon adjusted well from last week, much better physically. He’s got good footwork and nice ball playing ability. An intriguing prospect, not sure whether he will be playing round one, but feel it will be sooner rather than later.
