At best, he was high on ketamine and did it for keks like some kind of retarded teenage edgelord who can't help himself. At worst, it's a social engineering psyop to normalise fascist salutes and make dictators great again. Hard to say which.

Those on the left will readily point out that the gesture he gave was a quick, full extension of the arm outward with the palm down, quite identical to the National Socialist behavior. They also will argue that Musk is politically close to Trump, who is literally Hitler. And no spinster claiming it to be a Roman salute will change that.
Those on the right quickly counter by saying a seig heil doesn't begin with the hand over the heart. They claim that he can be heard saying, "My heart goes out to you." The right will also defer to the Anti-Defamation Leage who believe it wasn't a Nazi salute, but rather an autistic man caught up in the moment and not thinking about how his gestures might be interpreted. They will also point out that Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Kamala Harris, and many others have given a similar hand down gesture as a wave, with only Musk being criticized for it.
Whichever side you are on, just remember that you are completely correct and those who disagree with you are completely wrong. Don't let any amount of fact, reality, or opposing viewpoint cause you to doubt your pre-drawn conclusions.

It was a salute what else could it be? Who knows why he did it, maybe thought it was funny, maybe because he could, maybe because he uses too many drugs, maybe something else.
It looked bad and when I first saw it I thought geez but think it’s extreme wishful thinking from his detractors to believe he actually did/intended to do a ‘nazi salute’.
If you watch the whole thing and listen to what he’s saying it’s pretty clear he taps his heart and expresses it to the crowd.
Was it unfortunate looking? Definitely but think logically for a minute this is an ultra successful guy - if he actually was that way inclined why would he be dumb enough to “out himself” in such a fashion knowing the repercussions?

Whatever it was, I wouldn't want to be doing it in public and that about sums it up for me.
I suppose it could be a signal to the recently-emboldened fascist underbelly in Europe, to Orban, Putin, the AfD in Germany, time to come out of the shadows. Not saying it was, but this is how it starts every time.
